Purpose of the Mechanical Estimator
The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and commercially sound cost estimates for mechanical engineering projects across industrial, commercial, and infrastructure sectors. This role requires strong technical understanding, commercial awareness, and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, suppliers, and clients.
Key Responsibilities of the Mechanical Estimator
* Develop detailed mechanical cost estimates for tenders, proposals, and budget submissions.
* Interpret technical drawings, specifications, and project documentation to determine scope and material requirements.
* Conduct quantity take-offs, cost breakdowns, and labour assessments for mechanical systems (HVAC, piping, plant equipment, fabrication, installation).
* Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotations, validate pricing, and assess technical compliance.
* Prepare bid summaries, cost schedules, and tender deliverables in line with commercial standards.
* Work closely with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to ensure estimates reflect realistic delivery strategies
* Identify value engineering opportunities, alternative materials, and cost-saving solutions
* Support post-tender negotiations, clarifications, and client presentations.
* Maintain and update cost databases, benchmarking information, and historical project data.
* Ensure all estimating activities comply with company policies, industry regulations, and health & safety requirements.
To be Considered for the Mechanical Estimator
* Proven experience as a Mechanical Estimator within engineering, construction, M&E contracting, or industrial services
* Strong understanding of mechanical systems: HVAC, piping, pumps, plant equipment, fabrication, and installation methodologies.
* Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, P&IDs, schematics, and specifications.
* Proficiency with estimating software, Excel, and digital take-off tools.
* Excellent numerical accuracy, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to engage suppliers, clients, and internal stakeholders.
* Commercial awareness and understanding of tendering processes, procurement, and contractual considerations.
* Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tenders simultaneously.
* HNC/HND or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, or related discipline.
* Knowledge of NEC/JCT contract frameworks.
* Familiarity with BIM models and digital estimating platforms.
