How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has previously worked within the construction, civil engineering, rail or heavy civils sector and is confident managing subcontract packages from enquiry through to order placement.

The successful candidate will support project teams with the procurement of subcontractors and specialist suppliers, ensuring best value, commercial compliance and timely delivery across live projects. Rail experience would be highly advantageous, although candidates with strong heavy civils, infrastructure, groundworks, highways, utilities or general civil engineering subcontract procurement experience will also be considered.

    Key Responsibilities:

Procure subcontract packages in line with project requirements, budgets and programme deadlines

Source, evaluate and negotiate with subcontractors and specialist suppliers

Prepare enquiries, compare quotations and support subcontract award recommendations

Raise and manage purchase orders and subcontract orders

Liaise with site teams, commercial teams and project managers to understand procurement requirements

Maintain strong supplier and subcontractor relationships

Monitor subcontractor performance, availability and compliance

Support cost control, value engineering and procurement reporting

Ensure procurement activity is carried out in line with company procedures and project requirements

    Requirements:

Previous experience in a Buyer, Assistant Buyer, Procurement Officer or Subcontract Buyer role

Strong experience procuring subcontractors within civil engineering or construction

Rail, heavy civils, highways, utilities, groundworks or infrastructure experience would be ideal

Good understanding of subcontract procurement processes and supplier negotiation

Confident communicating with subcontractors, suppliers and internal project teams

Strong commercial awareness and attention to detail

Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and procurement systems

CIPS membership or working towards CIPS would be advantageous but is not essential
