How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Bring your EDI and wellbeing expertise to help shape a more inclusive solicitors’ profession

The Law Society is the independent professional body for solicitors. We have more than 200,000 members across England and Wales, around 100 Law Society Council members and 300 elected and appointed members. Our Council sets the strategic direction, which is implemented by our Board, and is aided by several other committees including the Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Wellbeing Committee (EDI&WC).

The Equality, Diversity, Inclusion & Wellbeing Committee’s role in the Law Society

EDI&WC advises the Board, its committees and other parts of the Law Society on EDI and wellbeing matters that affect our members and the profession. The committee helps review progress against the Law Society’s member facing EDI and wellbeing strategic goals and provides insight on emerging issues, good practice and innovation from within and beyond the legal sector.

We are seeking two new independent, non-solicitor members who can bring fresh perspectives, specialist expertise and practical experience from a range of professional backgrounds. EDI&WC reports to the Law Society’s Board and includes representatives from the diversity and inclusion network communities; for further information, please visit: Your communities | The Law Society.

    What you will need

The independent committee members will bring knowledge and/or experience of EDI and/or wellbeing issues, best practice and what works to drive positive change, within professional and workplace environments. They will also bring awareness of key EDI and/or wellbeing issues affecting solicitors and/or the wider legal sector, experience of developing and implementing evidence-informed approaches to EDI and/or wellbeing with measurable outcomes, and experience of advising organisations on EDI and/or wellbeing.

Members will provide strategic insight, constructive challenge, and practical recommendations that help the Law Society support its members and influence positive changes across the profession.

    Applicants

These independent member roles are intended to strengthen the committee with specialist EDI and/or wellbeing expertise from outside the solicitors’ profession. You do not need to be legally qualified or to have worked in the legal sector to apply. We welcome applications from EDI and wellbeing professionals working in any sector.

Ideal candidates will show a strong commitment to the values of the Law Society, the interests of its members and the public, and to building a more inclusive solicitors’ profession.

The role is unremunerated, although expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with our expenses policy. Committee members serve a term of three years, renewable for one further term.

Committee members are expected to attend four committee meetings per year, up to two of which are in-person/ hybrid.
