How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Portfolio Procurement has been engaged by our leading West London based client to recruit for a Food Buyer.

    As our Food Buyer, you will support the sourcing and purchasing of products to ensure the business maintains strong availability, quality, and value for customers.

    You will work closely with suppliers, operations, production, sales, and the wider buying team to place orders, monitor stock levels, track market pricing, and maintain supplier performance.

    You will help ensure products are purchased at competitive prices while meeting quality standards and operational requirements.

    This role is ideal for someone with experience in food purchasing who is looking to develop a long-term career in buying and procurement.

    Key Responsibilities

    You will support the day-to-day purchasing of fresh products in line with customer demand, production requirements, and business objectives.
    You will place purchase orders, monitor stock levels, and help ensure products are available when required while minimising waste and excess stock.
    You will review daily requirements and work closely with operations and production teams to maintain stock availability across key product categories
    You will build and maintain positive working relationships with suppliers, wholesalers, processors, and market contacts.
    You will communicate daily requirements, resolve supply issues, and assist with sourcing alternative products when shortages occur.
    You will monitor supplier performance and escalate concerns relating to pricing, quality, availability, or service levels.
    You will monitor market activity, seasonal availability, pricing trends and supply conditions.
    You will provide regular updates to the Senior Buyer on market movements, cost increases, shortages, and potential buying opportunities.

    Skills and experience:

    Previous experience within food purchasing.
    Good organisational and administrative skills.
    Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
    Strong communication skills and confidence working with suppliers and internal teams.
    Good numerical and analytical skills.
    Experience using Excel and purchasing or ERP systems.
    Commercial awareness and an interest in buying, procurement, and supplier management.
    Ability to work early mornings when required.
