How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Role: Mobile Mechanical Engineer

    Sector: Energy centres/District heating

    Location: Edinburgh, with infrequent trips to Newcastle

    Salary: £35-45K (dependant on experience) + On Call allowance + Pension/Healthcare

    The role:

    The Mobile Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for delivering planned preventative maintenance and reactive maintenance activities across all BE mechanical assets within the designated sites.

    The role will support the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of two district heating network Energy centres located at the Edinburgh and Newcastle Energy Centre.

    The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining critical energy centre infrastructure, diagnosing and resolving faults, supporting system performance, and ensuring compliance with operational, health & safety, and environmental standards.

    The position requires a proactive and flexible engineer capable of working across multiple sites to ensure continuity of service and optimal plant operation.

    Key Responsibilities

    * Perform planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance in line with CAFM schedules and operational requirements.

    * Respond promptly to plant breakdowns, system faults, and emergency callouts, including participation in the out-of-hours on-call rota.

    * Supervise and manage specialist sub-contractors undertaking works on site, ensuring compliance with site procedures and safety standards.

    * Ensure all Safe Systems of Work (SSOW), permits, and Safety Rules are always adhered to.

    * Maintain accurate maintenance records, reports, logbooks, and statutory documentation to a high standard.

    * Develop and maintain effective working relationships with customers, clients, suppliers, and key stakeholders.

    * Participate in continual professional development and maintain technical competence relevant to the role.

    * Ensure high standards of housekeeping and cleanliness are maintained across all plant areas and workspaces.

    * Obtain and maintain relevant site appointments and authorisations required for the role, including but not limited to Mechanical AP, LV CP, Gas RP, and F-Gas RP.

    * Complete all required company, technical, and site-specific training within the agreed timescales.

    Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)

    * Measures that define success in the role Planned Maintenance Completion Rate Achieve completion of all planned preventative maintenance tasks within scheduled timeframes as defined within the CAFM system.

    * Plant & Network Availability Maintain high operational availability and reliability of the district heating networks and associated energy centre assets, minimising downtime and service interruptions.

    * Health, Safety & Compliance Performance Maintain full compliance with Safety Rules, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW), statutory inspections, and mandatory training requirements, with zero serious safety breaches.

    Skills & Competencies

    * Relevant technical qualifications e.g. SVQ/NVQ level 3, HNC or equivalent.

    * Proven experience in mechanical maintenance particularly in district heating or a similar industry.

    * 2 years of experience in a mechanical engineer’s role or similar.

    * Ability to diagnose faults, troubleshoot mechanical systems and carry out effective repairs as required.

    * Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with clients, contractors, and colleagues.

    * Proactive and self-motivated approach with strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
