How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Assistant Quantity Surveyor

    Location: East London

    Position Type: Full-time, Permanent

Sector: Specialist Civil Engineering & Structures

    About The Client

The Client is a highly respected, 100% employee-owned specialist construction and civil engineering contractor with over 30 years of experience delivering complex, high-profile infrastructure and structural projects across the UK. Operating in highly constrained and challenging environments (including major rail, aviation, and landmark commercial developments), they specialize in structural services, concrete frames, demolition, and specialist sub-contract packages such as passive fire protection. As an employee-owned business, they offer a uniquely collaborative culture where every team member has a direct stake in the company’s long-term success.

    Role Purpose

We are seeking a driven and commercially minded Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join the commercial team. Working alongside a Senior Commercial Manager or Quantity Surveyor, you will assist in managing the financial performance of complex structural and civil engineering projects. This is a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious professional looking to accelerate their career within a major specialist contractor offering a clear, structured path to full QS status.

    Key Responsibilities

    *

Commercial Support: Assist in the day-to-day commercial management of live projects, ensuring cost control and profitability tracking.

    *

Subcontractor Management: Help prepare subcontractor tender packages, analyze incoming quotes, assist with procurement, and measure variations.

    *

Valuations & Variations: Support the preparation of monthly interim valuations, progress assessments, and the identification/pricing of project variations.

    *

Cost Reporting: Assist in compiling accurate monthly Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs) and financial forecasts.

    *

Site Measurement: Visit sites to carry out accurate material take-offs and progress measurements against architectural and engineering drawings.

    *

Records Maintenance: Maintain rigorous contemporary records, drawing registers, and commercial documentation to support contract compliance.

    Skills & Qualifications

    *

Education: Degree or HND/HNC in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related construction discipline (or actively working towards completion).

    *

Experience: 1–3 years of experience working as a Trainee or Assistant QS, ideally within a specialist sub-contractor, civil engineering, or RC frame environment.

    *

Technical Skills: Strong numeracy and IT skills, with proficiency in MS Excel and construction cost-management software. Ability to accurately read and interpret structural drawings.

    *

Contract Knowledge: Exposure to standard construction contracts, specifically NEC4 or JCT, is highly advantageous.

    *

Attributes: High attention to detail, strong communication skills for interfacing with site teams and subcontractors, and a proactive attitude toward problem-solving.

    Competitive salary tailored to experience.

Direct enrollment and benefits of an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) scheme.
