How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Position: Head of MFL 

    Location: Enfield 

    Salary: £37,870 - £56,154 per annum 

    Start date: September 2026 

    Smart Teachers is seeking an ambitious and inspirational Head of Modern Foreign Languages to lead a successful and growing department within a large, inclusive secondary school in North London.

    This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced MFL practitioner with a proven track record of raising attainment and inspiring students. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership across the department, driving high standards of teaching and learning while promoting a passion for languages and international culture.

    The department currently offers French and Spanish across Key Stages 3 and 4, with opportunities to further develop the curriculum and increase student engagement and uptake at examination level.

    Key Responsibilities

    Lead and manage the MFL department, ensuring outstanding teaching and learning.
    Develop and implement a challenging and engaging curriculum across all key stages.
    Monitor student progress and achievement, using data effectively to drive improvement.
    Support, coach, and develop teaching staff within the department.
    Promote innovative teaching strategies and the effective use of technology.
    Contribute to whole-school improvement initiatives and strategic planning.
    Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment where all students can succeed.

    The Successful Candidate Will Have

    Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
    A degree in French, Spanish, or a related subject.
    Proven experience teaching MFL at secondary level, including GCSE.
    Previous leadership experience or the ability to demonstrate readiness for middle leadership.
    A strong understanding of curriculum development and assessment.
    Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
    A commitment to raising standards and improving outcomes for all learners.
