How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work with cutting-edge roadside technology, helping to maintain and enhance the systems that keep millions of road users safe every day. From traffic signals and electronic signage to CCTV, communications infrastructure and intelligent transport systems, you'll play a vital role in ensuring critical technology assets remain operational, reliable and future-ready.

The primary depot for this role is Watford Gap Motorway Compound (M1 Junctions 16/17, NN6 7UZ). While the position is largely field-based and offers a high degree of autonomy, regular travel across the Area 7 network will be required.

    Contract Type: Permanent
Hours: 42 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Additional Benefits: Competitive salary, overtime opportunities and company vehicle

    What You'll Be Doing

As a Highways Technology Field Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining, diagnosing and improving a wide range of roadside technology assets across the strategic road network.

    Key responsibilities include:

    * Carrying out reactive maintenance and fault repairs on highways technology equipment, including electronic signs, traffic signals, CCTV systems, emergency roadside telephones, queue protection systems, radar-based traffic monitoring equipment and weather stations.

    * Delivering planned preventative maintenance in accordance with client requirements, manufacturer specifications and relevant British Standards.

    * Performing diagnostic testing and fault-finding on highways communications and electrical assets to identify and resolve issues efficiently.

    * Producing accurate technical reports covering maintenance activities, fault investigations, upgrades and asset condition assessments.

    * Providing technical guidance and support to colleagues, clients and contractors on best practices, procedures and technical issues.

    * Supporting project delivery activities, including progress monitoring, resource coordination and compliance management.

    * Working closely with contractors, suppliers and local authorities during the installation and commissioning of new technology infrastructure.

    * Participating in technology upgrades, system enhancements and the deployment of new roadside equipment.

    * Maintaining asset records and supporting emergency responses to critical incidents affecting highways technology systems.

    * Ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation through risk assessments, safe systems of work and adherence to company procedures.

    * Supporting the development of junior team members through mentoring, knowledge sharing and technical guidance.

    * Managing daily work activities as directed by the Works Coordinator, ensuring tasks are completed within agreed timescales.

    * Operating safely and effectively as a lone worker while maintaining high standards of communication and accountability.

    * Participating in the standby rota and volunteering for night works when operationally required.

    Why Join?

This role offers the opportunity to work on essential infrastructure projects while developing specialist skills within a growing and evolving sector.

    In return, our client offers:

    * Competitive salary with overtime opportunities.

    * Company vehicle, including access to a range of electric vehicles.

    * Structured career progression and development opportunities.

    * Comprehensive training programmes, including support towards NVQ Highways Technology qualifications.

    * Access to mentoring, leadership development and professional growth initiatives.

    * Generous pension scheme with employer contributions.

    * Minimum 24 days annual leave plus bank holidays, with the option to purchase additional leave.

    * Flexible benefits package including cycle-to-work schemes, charitable giving options and wellbeing initiatives.

    About You

We're looking for a motivated and technically minded individual who enjoys problem-solving, takes pride in delivering high-quality work and thrives both independently and as part of a wider team.

    Essential Requirements

    * Full UK Driving Licence.

    * Experience working with highways communication, electrical or technology assets.

    * Strong planning and organisational skills.

    Desirable Requirements

    * Qualification in an electrical, electronic or engineering discipline.

    * Previous experience within highways technology, intelligent transport systems or a related field.

    * City & Guilds 2391 Testing and Inspection qualification.

    * 18th Edition Wiring Regulations certification.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a team at the forefront of maintaining and enhancing critical infrastructure across the UK's strategic road network. If you're looking for a role that combines technical challenge, autonomy and career development, we'd love to hear from you.
