How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Our client, a dynamic and growing consultancy in the highways sector, is seeking to recruit an experienced Highways - Active Travel Engineer to take a leading role in delivering a diverse range of development schemes across the UK. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute design expertise across commercial, residential, healthcare, and education projects, ensuring high standards in compliance, technical excellence, and client satisfaction.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Design highways in accordance with relevant standards, including Local Highway Authority guidance, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20, DMRB, and NRSWA
    Design drainage systems in line with Sewerage Sector Guidance, the Code for Adoption Agreements, and The SuDS Manual (CIRIA C753)
    Undertake the design of public realm, active travel, cycling infrastructure improvements, major highways, and utilities coordination
    Gain experience in site monitoring and assist in the production of fee proposals and bids
    Liaise and negotiate with highway and planning authorities to agree proposed designs
    Coordinate highway and drainage adoption processes and legal requirements, including S278, S38, and S104 agreements
    Produce technical reports and attend meetings with clients, architects, contractors, local authorities, and other statutory bodies

    Job Requirements:

    A degree in Civil Engineering (or similar) with experience in civil engineering
    Working towards or holding a professional qualification (Incorporated or Chartered)
    Experience in the design of commercial and residential developments, including infrastructure, external works, and drainage
    Proficiency in industry software, including AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Site 3D, Causeway Flow (or InfoDrainage), Vehicle Tracking, and KeyLINES/SIGN/POST
    Sound understanding of national design standards and best practice, including knowledge of local authority and National Highways processes and requirements
    Strong communication and negotiation skills
    Good time management and organisational skills with the ability to maintain good records
    Ability to manage tasks and deliver projects on time and within budget
