How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Ecologist / ECoW

Location: Winchester, South East (On-site, Full-Time)

    Contract Type: Contract

Sector: Tier 1 Highways / Major Infrastructure

We are currently seeking experienced Ecologists and Ecological Clerks of Works (ECoW) to join a high-profile Tier 1 highways project in Winchester. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in delivering ecological compliance and environmental protection on one of the region’s major infrastructure schemes.

Working under the direction of the Lead Ecologist, you will be embedded within the site team, ensuring construction activities are carried out in line with ecological legislation, protected species requirements, and project environmental commitments.

    Key Responsibilities

Act as on-site ECoW, providing real-time ecological advice and oversight to construction teams

Deliver toolbox talks, inductions, and ecological briefings to site personnel

Undertake ecological surveys and monitoring, with a focus on bats, nesting birds, and hazel dormouse

Provide watching briefs during high-risk construction activities

Ensure compliance with relevant wildlife legislation, protected species licensces, and planning conditions

Liaise closely with site engineers, contractors, and the Lead Ecologist to integrate ecological requirements into construction methodologies

Produce clear, accurate site reports and record ecological findings

Support mitigation implementation and respond to ecological constraints in real time

    Requirements

Proven experience in ecological consultancy or site-based ECoW roles

Strong field skills in protected species surveys, particularly bats, nesting birds, and dormice

Hold (or be eligible for) relevant protected species licences, with dormouse licence highly desirable

Previous experience on large infrastructure or highways projects, ideally with Tier 1 contractors

Valid CSCS card (or willingness to obtain prior to commencement)

Strong understanding of UK wildlife legislation and mitigation practices

Ability to work flexibly, including night shifts and occasional weekend work

Excellent communication skills with the ability to advise site teams confidently and clearly

    What’s on Offer

Opportunity to work on a major national infrastructure project

Long-term contract potential with consistent site-based work

Exposure to complex ecological challenges within a Tier 1 environment

Collaborative working with experienced ecologists and construction professionals

    Competitive day rate (DOE)

If you are an experienced ecologist looking to take a hands-on role in delivering ecological compliance on a major highways scheme, we’d like to hear from you
