How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Part Time Fire Alarm Tester
    Location: Kingston, KT1 2EE
    Salary: £17,131.30 per annum (pay review August 2026)
    Contract: Part Time, Permanent (22.2 hours per week)
    Working Pattern: 3 days per week – Tuesday, Wednesday, plus 1 flexible day

    KUSCO (Kingston University Service Company Ltd) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kingston University, providing facilities management services across the University estate.
    We are now looking for a reliable, self-motivated Fire Alarm Tester to join our Estates and Asset Department.
    This is a crucial role responsible for ensuring fire safety systems across multiple University sites are tested, maintained and compliant, helping to keep staff, students and visitors safe every day.
    About the Fire Alarm Tester Role
    Working across four campus sites, halls of residence and additional buildings within the local area, you will carry out a structured programme of fire safety testing and checks.
    You’ll be responsible for testing over 50 fire alarm systems weekly, along with other fire protection systems, and completing routine fire door inspections.
    This is a practical, site-based role that requires attention to detail, good organisation, and the ability to work independently.
    What You’ll Be Doing
    * Carrying out weekly fire alarm testing across all University buildings in line with British Standard 5839-1 and internal procedures
    * Completing 6-monthly fire door inspections in line with set schedules
    * Recording all testing, checks and observations accurately in fire safety logbooks and electronic systems (e.g. Nimbus)
    * Reporting faults, defects or issues immediately via mobile systems or the FM Helpdesk
    * Monitoring fire safety risks (e.g. blocked exits, combustible materials), recording and reporting findings
    * Coordinating activities with fire wardens, security, maintenance teams and contractors
    * Supporting fire drills, panel activations, fire risk assessments and audits
    * Assisting with fire marshal training when required
    * Contributing to ongoing fire safety improvements across the estate
    Testing and checking associated systems including:
    * Smoke ventilation systems
    * Fire curtains
    * Refuge call points
    * Automatic door closers and door release mechanisms
    In order to be successful in this role you must have:
    * Full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle (mileage reimbursed)
    * Strong timekeeping and ability to follow structured schedules
    * Able to work independently and solve problems with minimal supervision
    * Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow procedures accurately
    * Good communication skills (written and verbal)
    * Strong record-keeping and administrative ability
    * Basic understanding of Health & Safety requirements
    * Basic IT skills and confidence using mobile devices / tablets
    * Good level of physical fitness (role involves being on your feet most of the day)
    It would be great if you had:
    * Experience with fire alarm systems or similar technical systems
    * Knowledge of fire safety procedures, British Standards or electrical systems
    * Experience using Nimbus or similar electronic log systems
    * Previous fire marshal training or fire safety responsibilities
    * Practical, hands-on technical skills and basic fault finding
