How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Bar Hill, Cambridgeshire Job type: Permanent, full time Salary: Up to £60,000 per annum, plus competitive benefits and annual company bonus Hours: 35 hours per week

    The Role

We are recruiting a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer on behalf of a world-leading, independently owned technology business based local to Cambridge. Financially stable and expanding globally, this is a business that invests in its people and offers a genuinely challenging and rewarding environment for engineers who want real ownership of their work.

This is a hands-on senior role with true accountability — you will lead mechanical design projects from initial requirements capture through to production release and in-service support, working across design, testing, production, and suppliers to deliver robust, practical engineering solutions. If you are a self-motivated mechanical engineer who takes pride in seeing projects through from start to finish, and you are looking for a role where your contribution genuinely matters, we would love to hear from you.

    Main responsibilities

    * Lead the design and development of mechanical systems and components, taking designs from requirements capture through to production and eventual obsolescence

    * Produce clear, accurate CAD models, drawings, and technical specifications using SolidWorks

    * Carry out mechanical analysis including structural and tolerance analysis to ensure designs are fit for purpose

    * Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes, building and evaluating prototypes where required

    * Take ownership of work packages, planning and tracking delivery on time and within budget

    * Define and execute practical test plans, working with test teams to carry out environmental and performance testing

    * Identify and resolve design and product issues, taking a structured, logical approach to fault finding

    * Support production and service teams in diagnosing and resolving technical problems

    * Work closely with electrical, software, production, and service teams, and engage with suppliers to ensure components are delivered to specification

    * Support and mentor junior engineers, providing clear technical direction where needed

    * Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement across products, processes, and reliability

    Skills/experience

    Essential:

    * Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline

    * Strong experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing environment

    * Confident using SolidWorks CAD to produce production-ready designs

    * Good understanding of materials and manufacturing processes

    * Proven track record of delivering engineering work to deadlines

    * Practical, methodical approach to problem solving and fault finding

    * Comfortable working across disciplines and with external suppliers

    * Clear communicator, able to explain technical issues without overcomplicating them

    * Self-motivated, reliable, and proactive

    Salary & working hours

    * Salary: Up to £60,000 per annum, plus competitive benefits and annual company bonus

    * Hours: Daytime hours, Monday to Friday

    * Occasional additional hours may be required to meet project deadlines
