How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Mechanical Design Engineer - Water Infrastructure
    Location: North West England (Site-Based)
    Salary: £60,000 - £75,000 DOE
    Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 - 18:00 (Approx. 50 hours per week)
    The Role
    Are you a Mechanical Design Engineer looking to play a key role in delivering major AMP8 water infrastructure projects across the North West? Our client is looking for an individual to work on a portfolio of Better Rivers schemes, you will be involved in projects from initial concept and planning through to commissioning and handover.
    This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with experience in mechanical design within the water, wastewater, or process infrastructure sectors who wants to play a key role in delivering environmentally significant projects focused on storm overflow reduction, CSO upgrades, and new storage and treatment assets.
    Key Responsibilities
    ·Review incoming mechanical design packages and develop clear, detailed design briefs.
    ·Produce mechanical designs and supporting documentation for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
    ·Maintain design registers and project design documentation.
    ·Complete design calculations, hydraulic assessments, pump duty point analysis, system curve analysis, risk assessments, P&IDs, and equipment specifications.
    ·Liaise with site delivery teams to ensure designs are practical, buildable, and maintainable.
    ·Attend project sites to review installation progress and provide technical support during construction.
    ·Ensure mechanical designs are delivered in accordance with project requirements, industry standards, and client specifications.
    ·Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary design and delivery teams throughout the project lifecycle.
    Technical Responsibilities
    Design work will typically include:
    Pumping Stations
    ·Wet well and dry well pump selection.
    ·Duty, standby, and assist pump configurations.
    ·Hydraulic sizing for foul water and stormwater applications.
    Pump Systems
    ·Submersible and dry-mounted pump design.
    ·Booster pump sets.
    ·Valves, penstocks, flow control equipment, and associated mechanical assets.
    Pipework & Pumping Mains
    ·Suction and delivery pipework design.
    ·Surge and transient analysis.
    ·Material selection and pipe support arrangements.
    Detention Tanks & Storage Infrastructure
    ·Tank flushing and cleaning systems.
    ·Tipping bucket and vacuum flushing systems.
    ·Washwater arrangements and odour control systems.
    Ancillary Mechanical Equipment
    ·Penstocks and actuators.
    ·Screens and screening equipment.
    ·Lifting equipment, davits, and gantry systems.
    ·Mechanical interfaces with existing operational assets.
    Requirements
    Essential Experience
    ·Approximately 3+ years' experience in mechanical design engineering.
    ·Experience within water, wastewater, utilities, or process infrastructure environments.
    ·Strong understanding of pump selection and hydraulic system design.
    ·Experience producing mechanical calculations and equipment specifications.
    ·Ability to interpret and develop P&IDs and general arrangement drawings.
    ·Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar 2D CAD software.
    ·Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    Technical Knowledge
    ·Hydraulic system design, including system curves, duty points, NPSH, and surge/transient considerations.
    ·Pipework design and material selection to relevant industry standards.
    ·Mechanical plant specification, including valves, penstocks, actuators, screens, and lifting equipment.
    ·Familiarity with hydraulic modelling, pump selection, or surge analysis software.

    Eligibility
