How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    About the Role

    Our client is seeking an experienced Temporary Works Designer to join their growing engineering team in Manchester. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in the design and delivery of major civil engineering and infrastructure projects across the UK.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, coordination, review, and technical assurance of temporary works solutions, ensuring safe, practical, and cost-effective designs are delivered throughout the project lifecycle. Working closely with project teams, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders, you will support the successful delivery of complex civil engineering projects from concept through to construction and final removal of temporary works.

    This role offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of infrastructure and civil engineering projects while contributing to the development of innovative engineering solutions and mentoring junior team members.

    Key Responsibilities

    Design & Technical Delivery

    Produce and coordinate temporary works and civil engineering designs from feasibility through to construction and removal.

    Prepare design calculations, technical reports, drawings, and supporting documentation.

    Review and check temporary works designs produced internally and by third-party designers.

    Ensure designs comply with relevant British Standards, Eurocodes, industry guidance, and client specifications.

    Provide practical engineering solutions that support safe and efficient project delivery.

    Technical Assurance & Compliance

    Undertake design checks and technical reviews of engineering calculations and documentation.

    Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations and all relevant legal and regulatory requirements.

    Support design approvals and technical assurance processes.

    Promote a strong Safety by Design culture throughout all project activities.

    Identify and manage design risks, ensuring appropriate mitigation measures are implemented.

    Project Coordination

    Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary design teams, project managers, contractors, and external consultants.

    Coordinate the delivery of temporary works designs to meet project programmes and construction requirements.

    Provide technical advice regarding constructability, sequencing, and installation methodologies.

    Liaise with subcontractors and specialist suppliers to ensure suitable design solutions are developed and delivered.

    Team Development

    Mentor and support junior engineers and designers.

    Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes, procedures, and design standards.

    Support the development of design tools, software, and engineering best practices.

    Assist in driving innovation and technical excellence across the design function.

    Essential Requirements

    Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline.

    Proven experience in the design and checking of temporary works for civil engineering or infrastructure projects.

    Strong understanding of temporary works procedures and industry best practice.

    Experience producing engineering calculations, technical reports, and design documentation.

    Knowledge of relevant British Standards, Eurocodes, and CDM Regulations.

    Experience coordinating with contractors, consultants, and multidisciplinary design teams.

    Proficient in Microsoft Office and CAD software.

    Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

    Desirable Requirements

    Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership with the ICE or IStructE.

    Experience working on major infrastructure, utilities, highways, rail, power, or civil engineering projects.

    Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) or Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) experience.

    Experience managing external design consultants and specialist subcontractors.

    Familiarity with geotechnical and structural design principles.
