How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Cemetery Maintenance Operative
    Grade: 1
    Section: Bereavement Services
    Location: Various cemetery and crematoria sites across the city
    Pay:£13.45
     
    About the Role
    We are seeking committed and hardworking individuals to join our Bereavement Services team as Cemetery Maintenance Operatives. This important role helps ensure the city's cemeteries and crematoria remain safe, clean, dignified, and respectful places for bereaved families and visitors.
    This is a varied outdoor role involving grounds maintenance, site care, and practical support across multiple locations. Successful candidates will be expected to work both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and professionalism at all times.
    Please note: A valid Category C1 driving licence is essential for this role, as operatives are required to drive utility vehicles for maintenance purposes and travel between sites.
     
    Key Responsibilities
    As a Cemetery Maintenance Operative, your duties will include:

    Emptying refuse and dog waste bins and transferring waste to bulk collection facilities.
    Removing and appropriately disposing of floral tributes, memorial items, and litter across cemetery and crematoria sites.
    Maintaining pathways and hard-surfaced areas, including winter maintenance duties when required.
    Carrying out ground levelling, seeding, and turfing activities to maintain site standards.
    Completing a full range of maintenance duties as directed by Team Leaders.
    Unlocking and locking cemetery and crematoria sites in line with seasonal opening hours, including weekend working where required.
    Undertaking general repairs and maintenance duties appropriate to the role grade.
    Maintaining accurate records, including worksheets, timesheets, and vehicle checklists where necessary.
    Identifying, reporting, and helping resolve safety hazards or appearance-related issues affecting cemetery grounds.
    Working flexibly on your own initiative and collaboratively as part of a wider team.
    Complying with all Council policies and procedures, including Health & Safety, Equality, and relevant Government regulations. You may also be required to undertake other duties appropriate to the grade as reasonably requested by senior management.
     
    Essential Requirements 

    A valid Category C1 driving licence is required for this role.
    Ability and confidence to drive utility vehicles for maintenance purposes and travel between multiple sites across the city. Experience & Skills

    Experience of physical work, ideally within an outdoor environment.
    Previous experience in a customer-facing role.
    Good communication skills and the ability to interact respectfully and sensitively with bereaved families and visitors.
    A commitment to delivering a high-quality bereavement service.
    Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    A flexible approach to working across multiple locations and varying working hours.
    Ability to complete basic paperwork and reports accurately.
    Understanding of and ability to follow health and safety procedures.
    Capability to undertake physically demanding work in all weather conditions.
    Ability to travel across the city to different maintenance locations.
    Ability to speak an appropriate standard of spoken English in accordance with Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016). Qualifications & Knowledge

    Ability to follow predefined work routes and specifications.
    Ability to understand and comply with Council policies and procedures. Training

    Willingness to attend training and develop new skills. Working Pattern
    This role includes outdoor working across multiple cemetery and crematoria locations and may involve weekend working to support seasonal opening arrangements.
