How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    This role has a starting salary of £19,343 per annum for a 25.2 hour working week.

    We are excited to be hiring two part-time Heritage Assistants to join our fantastic Heritage team at Surrey History Centre, Woking. One post is 28.8 hours a week, the other 25.2. The successful candidates will help customers to make the most of our vast historic collections of archives, books, maps and illustrations documenting the history of Surrey and its people over nine centuries.

    As a Heritage Assistant, you'll join our friendly team of archivists, librarian, conservator and assistants to bring Surrey's fascinating documentary history to life. You will work with us to make the past accessible and enrich the lives of our community by sharing Surrey's heritage in an engaging and meaningful way.

    You'll be at the heart of our welcoming frontline service, ensuring every visitor receives a warm and inclusive experience, fully aligned with SCC's customer care values.

    Through regular duty in our public searchroom, including occasional Saturdays, you'll guide and support visitors as they explore our collections, ensuring the security and safe handling of our unique materials. You'll play a pivotal role in delivering outstanding service, responding to enquiries, preparing helpful finding aids and taking part in outreach activities such as building tours and engaging talks. This is a rewarding opportunity to connect with people, promote local history and develop your skills in a lively and supportive setting.

    Shortlisting Criteria

    In order to be considered for shortlisting, your application will clearly evidence the following skills:

    A Vocational Qualification Level 2 or equivalent in the relevant field, or comparable experience of working with archives and local studies materials
    Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
