How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Senior and Bridge Engineer

    Location: Inverness, Perth or Stepps (North‑West Region)
    Category: Engineering – Bridges
    Contract Type: Full‑Time, Permanent
    Working Pattern: Monday–Friday
    Working Style: Hybrid (office and remote)

    BEAR Scotland is a leading provider of Highway Maintenance services across Scotland. We manage and maintain over 1422km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling just about every imaginable task and working round the clock to keep Scotland moving.

    BEAR Scotland inspect, manage and maintain over 1422km of Scotland’s trunk road network including 1422 trunk road structures in the North West of Scotland for our client, Transport Scotland. We work in some of the most scenic but challenging parts of the country on a variety of structures including historical masonry arch bridges, culverts and walls as well as numerous iconic major structures such as Kessock, Skye, Connel and Dornoch Bridges.

    Join our North‑West Bridges Team as a Bridge Engineer or Senior Bridge Engineer in either our Perth or Inverness office. We’re looking for self‑driven team players who are eager to support a broad and varied programme of work. To succeed, you’ll bring strong communication skills, adaptability, and a valid driving licence.

    Key Role and Responsibilities:

    Core Responsibilities (All Levels)

    * Work in accordance with Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures within the company’s Integrated Management System.

    * Deliver allocated projects on time and within budget.

    * Assist with outline and detailed design of bridge maintenance or improvement schemes, including preparing cost estimates and maintaining accurate design records.

    * Update structural records using client-approved structures management systems.

    * Support cost monitoring, client communication, and general project correspondence.

    * Plan and manage day‑to‑day workload effectively.

    * Contribute to CDM compliance, including risk assessments and Health & Safety information packs.

    * Support the supervision and coordination of sub-contractors.

    * Collaborate with colleagues across the Bridges Team as required.

    Additional Responsibilities – Senior Bridge Engineers

    * Lead the financial and technical performance of allocated schemes.

    * Ensure full compliance with CDM and oversee robust risk assessments for all works, inspections, and operations.

    * Liaise with clients, auditors, and external stakeholders.

    * Manage the outline and detailed design of bridge projects and oversee associated documentation and costings.

    * Prepare tender documents, evaluate submissions, and support contract award.

    * Procure, supervise, and measure works in line with standards and client requirements.

    * Manage and mentor a small design team, sub‑consultants, and sub‑contractors.

    * Coordinate the production, issue, and archiving of drawings, documents, and scheme files.

    * Ensure compliance with technical standards and environmental requirements, including environmental screening and mitigation.

    * Prepare and submit Departures from Standard where applicable.

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

    * Educated to degree level in Civil or Structural Engineering

    * Relevant experience in the design and maintenance of highway bridge structures.

    * Professional qualifications and membership of an appropriate professional body (IEng / CEng and MICE, MIStructE, IHE etc.)

    * A full approved UK driving licence.

    * Skilled in the project management of schemes and the management of teams.

    * Clear communicator with good technical/report writing skills.
