How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Managing Quantity Surveyor – Civil Engineering / Highways Infrastructure

Location: Wakefield / Featherstone, West Yorkshire
    Employment Type: Permanent
Salary: Competitive salary + car allowance + benefits
Sector: Civil Engineering / Highways / Structures Maintenance

Fulcrum Recruitment is working with a well-established UK contractor that is looking to appoint an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead the commercial function for a busy infrastructure delivery operation in West Yorkshire.

This is a senior commercial leadership opportunity with a specialist contractor delivering highways, bridges and structures maintenance work across major road networks, local authority frameworks and tier-one contractor environments.

The business has been established for over 30 years, employs more than 300 people across multiple regional offices and has a strong reputation in specialist infrastructure maintenance, repair and refurbishment.

    The Role

As Managing Quantity Surveyor, you will act as the senior commercial lead for a busy regional operation, taking responsibility for commercial governance, NEC contract administration, change control, reporting and financial performance.

You will report to the Commercial Director and work closely with the local Operations Manager, senior leadership team and wider project delivery teams.

The role will also involve managing and mentoring a small Quantity Surveying team, including junior and apprentice-level commercial staff, while helping to strengthen best practice across live projects.

    Project Types

The contractor delivers planned and reactive highways and structures maintenance schemes, including bridge repair and maintenance, deck waterproofing, expansion joints, bearings, concrete repairs and wider highways maintenance works.

The business also provides early contractor involvement, design support and specification input to help develop practical, buildable and commercially robust solutions.

    Key Responsibilities

    * Lead the commercial function across a busy highways and structures maintenance operation.

    * Manage NEC contract administration, including early warnings, compensation events, change control and CEMAR or CE registers.

    * Oversee applications, cash collection, interim valuations, final accounts, invoicing and resolution of client queries.

    * Produce and manage turnover, margin budgets, forecasts, commercial reporting and senior management updates.

    * Review contract and subcontract terms, manage commercial risk and support dispute or claim resolution where required.

    * Work closely with pre-contract, estimating and operational teams to support bids, project award, mobilisation and delivery.

    * Identify cost savings, value engineering opportunities and margin protection measures across live projects.

    * Line manage, mentor and develop Quantity Surveyors, supporting performance, development and progression.

    Candidate Requirements

    * Previous experience as a Senior Quantity Surveyor, Managing Quantity Surveyor or senior commercial lead within civil engineering, highways, infrastructure or specialist contracting.

    * Strong NEC contract knowledge, with confidence managing change, compensation events, commercial governance and contractual processes.

    * Proven ability to lead people, support operational delivery and influence project performance through strong commercial management.

    * BSc, MSc or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline would be beneficial.

    * Strong reporting ability, good MS Office skills and confidence handling commercial, contractual and financial information.

    * Professional, organised and discreet approach, with the ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.

    * Flexible approach to travel as required by the role.

    The Opportunity

This is a senior and visible commercial leadership role offering real influence over operational and commercial outcomes.

The position would suit an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor, or a strong Senior Quantity Surveyor ready to step into a broader leadership role with responsibility for people, process, governance and commercial performance.

You will be joining a stable and established employer with national capability, a specialist high-demand service offering and clear scope to shape the commercial function across projects.

    Package

The package includes a competitive salary, car allowance and strong wider benefits, including pension, private healthcare, death in service, holiday entitlement and discretionary bonus provision.

The role is primarily office-based in West Yorkshire, with site travel as required and potential for some agreed home working.
