How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Sub Agent – Civil Engineering

    Location: Seaham / North East
    Employment Type: Permanent
    Salary: Competitive salary + package
Sector: Civil Engineering / Main Contractor

Fulcrum Recruitment is working with a respected civil engineering main contractor that is looking to appoint an experienced Sub Agent to support the delivery of a landmark civil engineering scheme in the North East.

This is a permanent opportunity with a well-established design-and-build contractor delivering civil engineering and infrastructure projects across the region. The role will suit an experienced Sub Agent, or a strong Section Engineer / Senior Engineer who has already stepped into management and is ready for broader responsibility.

The position will be based around Seaham, with regional travel as required.

    The Role

As Sub Agent, you will take day-to-day responsibility for site delivery, supporting the successful management of civil engineering works from planning and coordination through to completion and handover.

You will lead site teams, coordinate subcontractors, manage short-term programmes, maintain quality and safety standards, support commercial processes and ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently and to specification.

The role will suit someone who is hands-on, technically strong, commercially aware and confident working with clients, subcontractors, engineers and operational teams.

    Project Types

Projects can include highways, roads, public realm, reinforced concrete structures, bridge-related works, drainage, infrastructure improvements and wider civil engineering schemes.

This particular opportunity is linked to landmark works at an iconic North East structure, offering the chance to be involved in a technically interesting and high-profile regional project.

    Key Responsibilities

    * Lead day-to-day site delivery, coordinating site teams, subcontractors and supply chain partners.

    * Manage health, safety and environmental standards, including inductions, toolbox talks, RAMS, permits and safe systems of work.

    * Support temporary works coordination, construction phase planning, H&S file information and handover documentation.

    * Build, manage and update weekly programmes while supporting wider planning, procurement schedules and monthly programme updates.

    * Monitor progress, identify constraints, raise technical queries and help resolve issues before they impact programme or cost.

    * Maintain QA records, as-builts, site documentation and document management systems to ensure audit-ready records.

    * Support NEC / JCT contract processes, including early warnings, change control, measurements, variations and commercial reporting.

    * Chair or contribute to internal and client progress meetings, producing clear daily, weekly and monthly updates.

    * Mentor engineers and site staff while setting strong standards for workmanship, communication and record keeping.

    Candidate Requirements

    * Proven experience within civil engineering, ideally including highways, roads, public realm, reinforced concrete, structures, drainage or similar infrastructure works.

    * Previous experience as a Sub Agent, or as a Senior Engineer / Section Engineer ready to step into a broader site management role.

    * Strong engineering background with a good understanding of technical delivery, site records, QA, programme management and subcontractor coordination.

    * SMSTS and CSCS Gold, or above, are required.

    * HNC, HND, degree or equivalent civil engineering qualification would be beneficial.

    * Exposure to bridge structures, scaffolding or structural works would be advantageous.

    * Working knowledge of NEC / JCT contracts, planning software basics and modern document control systems would be useful.

    * Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across the region when required.

    The Opportunity

This is a strong long-term opportunity with a respected regional main contractor delivering technically interesting civil engineering works in the North East.

The role offers the chance to take ownership of sections of work, influence project outcomes and continue developing towards Site Agent level.

It would suit someone who is safety-focused, organised, calm under pressure, commercially aware and able to communicate clearly with clients, subcontractors, operatives and wider project teams.

    Package

The package includes a competitive salary, vehicle or car allowance, pension and company benefits. The role also offers professional development, regional work, exposure to landmark civil engineering schemes and genuine progression opportunities.
