As Assistant Accountant, you will be working alongside the Finance Manager & MD producing the accounts for 3 construction businesses, that have a turnover of £30m+. They are looking for a competent accounts person who is comfortable producing management accounts and is looking to progress in the future. Bonus points if you have CIS experience.
Duties and responsibilities for the Assistant Accountant:
Support the Group Finance Manager with month-end processes and reporting
Prepare nominal ledger entries, including accruals, prepayments and fixed asset updates
Monitor project costs, variations and margins across the business
Get involved in cashflow forecasting and budget preparation to support wider business decisions
Manage CIS payments accurately and on time
Carry out bank reconciliations and help keep the finance function running smoothly
Maintain the cashbook and ensure records are accurate and up to date
Prepare and submit VAT returns
Reconcile the purchase and sales ledgers at month end
Handle day-to-day invoicing and credit control
Skills and experience required for the Assistant Accountant:
Previous experience in an Accounts role, ideally within construction or a project‑based environment.
Strong understanding of CIS, VAT, and UK accounting practices.
Proficiency in accounting software
Excellent numerical accuracy and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills with confidence to follow up debts professionally.
Ability to manage workload independently in a small business environment.
Strong organisational skills, especially with digital and paper filing systems
