How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Science Technician
    Location: Norfolk
    Salary: £18,406 - £19,967 per annum, including an allocation for holiday pay (FTE £26,403 - £28,142 pa)
    Vacancy Type: Permanent, Term time plus one week (30hrs per week)

    PERSON SPECIFICATION
    The personal competencies expected of all School support staff are:

    The professional competencies expected of a Science Technician are:
    * Have a genuine and keen interest in Science;

    * To be aware of COSHH regulations.
    The qualifications and previous experience required for a Science Technician are:
    * GCSE pass at C or above in Maths and English or equivalent.
    * Be familiar with scientific equipment;
    * Computer literate – able to use Word and Excel.
    * Experience of working in a laboratory would be a benefit although full training will be given.
    Specific Responsibilities
    Planning and Preparation
    * Prepare and assemble apparatus and components for demonstration, class practical work, assessments and examinations. To prepare solutions and materials.
    * Install, test and calibrate both existing and new equipment.
    * Construct and devise equipment to meet the changing needs of practical programmes, including the manufacture of teaching aids.
    * Adapt apparatus and basic storage facilities.
    * Construct and maintain the plug-in peripheral equipment for computers and electronic measuring devices.
    Maintenance
    * Ensure that equipment, materials and apparatus, including teaching aids, are maintained in a serviceable and safe condition.
    * Undertake repairs when necessary and, where applicable, recommend or arrange outside repairs, replacement or maintenance.
    * Ensure that any scientific debris or hazardous materials/spills are removed from the sinks, benchtops and other areas to provide a safe environment for cleaning staff and others.
    * Deal with spillages/emergencies during practical activities.
    * Ensure that gas and water taps are turned off, and that electrical connections, chemical solutions and other materials are left stored in a safe and secure condition, ready for re-use.
    * Monitor the condition and stock levels of all apparatus, reagents and materials with regard to shelf life, safety and economy by undertaking regular checks.
    * Diagnose faults and take necessary action accordingly, including proposing alternatives for damaged/faulty equipment.
    * Ensure that appropriate levels of stock are maintained to meet the requirements of the department.
    * Ensure that residues and outdated stock are disposed of in a safe, efficient manner.
