Do you know why it benefits your boss to keep you on resi projects far longer than you'd like?
Because you're profitable where you are. Loads of inspectors signing off domestic work is the volume business, and every month you stay at that grade is another month the rota doesn't have to be rebuilt around you, and another month they don’t have to spend money investing in you.
If you love the basic Residential stuff, no problem. Crack on.
If you want to get your teeth into the commercial world and beyond then you’re in luck.
This group runs the opposite way to most. The structure is built around moving inspectors up the classes as fast as you can absorb it, because their pipeline needs commercial-capable inspectors, not another C2A sitting on domestic work for the next five years.
There’s £25k+ of pay rises for you across that time at least.
What changes day-to-day
You'd work locally, never venturing outside of the Northwest and rarely outside of Greater Manchester / Merseyside if being home in time for tea is what’s important.
Flexibility is also yours to run with. They don't mind you working from home so you can openly pick the kids up or walk the dog when it’s quiet. They're not watching what time you start or finish. As long as the work's getting delivered and nothing's slipping, you crack on.
The longer game
Two things sit beyond the class progression, if you want them:
BSA consultancy work as you move up. There's a route into the consulting side of the group for inspectors who want it. No more site visits, less reports and no need to go up the classes to get involved in HRBs. But it’s optional.
International transfers. The group has operations in Australia and Canada, and inspectors who've been here a few years can have the option to move across when the need arises.
If you have a lot of experience you'll start on £55,000 at least. Whether you're earlier in your journey, or fed up of handing your notice in for a small rise, they come to you with pay rises, usually every 6 months, without you asking.
