An innovative technology company based in the Greater Cambridge area is seeking a talented and motivated Experimental Physicist to join a growing research and development team focused on infrared detection and characterisation technologies.
The Role
You will design, build, and operate experimental systems for infrared detection, working across the full development pipeline — from sensor selection and optical design through to signal processing and data analysis. The role offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and help shape the direction of future development programmes.
You will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to develop and refine advanced detection techniques for real-world applications.
Key Requirements
Degree in Physics, Applied Physics, or a closely related discipline
(PhD preferred, but not essential depending on experience)
Hands-on experience with infrared sensors, detectors, or imaging systems
Strong experimental and laboratory skills, including building and troubleshooting optical and electronic systems
Familiarity with signal processing and data analysis, ideally within a detection or imaging environment
Practical, methodical problem-solving approach with strong attention to detail
Good communication skills and ability to work effectively within a collaborative team
Desirable Experience
Radiometry and photometry
Thermal imaging or LWIR/MWIR/SWIR systems
Optical modelling and simulation
Experience within defence, security, industrial sensing, or related sectors
