How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Overview

A civil engineering contractor delivering major earthworks, infrastructure, highways and utilities packages is looking to appoint a Health and Safety Advisor to support live projects across the South East.

The role will suit a site-focused H&S professional with experience in heavy civils, earthworks, drainage, highways, utilities or infrastructure environments. The successful candidate will work closely with site teams, project managers and operational leads to maintain safe systems of work, support compliance and promote strong health and safety standards across active civil engineering projects

    Key Responsibilities

    * Support project teams in the delivery of health and safety standards across civil engineering, earthworks, highways, utilities and infrastructure projects.

    * Carry out regular site inspections, audits and safety observations across live construction sites.

    * Review RAMS, construction phase plans, lifting plans, permits and task-specific safety documentation.

    * Provide practical health and safety advice to Site Managers, Project Managers, Engineers, Supervisors and Foremen.

    * Support safe delivery of earthworks, drainage, excavation, temporary works, plant movement, lifting operations and utility interface activities.

    * Monitor compliance with company procedures, CDM Regulations, client requirements and relevant UK health and safety legislation.

    * Assist with incident investigations, near-miss reporting, root cause analysis and corrective action close-out.

    * Support toolbox talks, briefings, inductions and behavioural safety initiatives.

    * Work with site teams to identify hazards, reduce risk and improve safe working practices.

    * Assist in maintaining project health and safety records, inspection reports and audit evidence.

    * Liaise with clients, principal contractors, subcontractors and external stakeholders on H&S matters.

    * Support temporary works, excavation safety, traffic management, plant and lifting activity reviews where required.

    * Promote a positive safety culture while maintaining a practical, site-led approach.

    * Track actions from audits, inspections and incident reviews through to completion.

    * Support continuous improvement across project safety performance.

    Requirements

    * Previous experience as a Health and Safety Advisor within civil engineering, infrastructure, earthworks, highways, utilities, remediation or groundworks.

    * Strong understanding of site-based civil engineering operations.

    * Knowledge of CDM Regulations and UK construction health and safety legislation.

    * Experience reviewing RAMS, CPPs, permits, inspection records and site safety documentation.

    * Comfortable working across live construction environments with plant, excavations, drainage, utilities and temporary works interfaces.

    * NEBOSH Construction Certificate or equivalent.

    * TechIOSH or working towards IOSH membership would be beneficial.

    * CSCS card required.

    * Full UK driving licence required.

    * Strong communication skills with the ability to engage site teams, subcontractors and management.

    * Practical, visible and proactive approach to health and safety.

    Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be confident working directly with site teams and operational staff, with the ability to give clear, practical advice in a civil engineering environment. They should be comfortable visiting multiple projects, identifying risk, challenging unsafe practice where required and supporting delivery teams to maintain safe, compliant and productive sites.
