Yard Operative
📍 Location: South Yorkshire
Overview
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Yard Operative to join a growing team in South Yorkshire. This role is based within a busy industrial yard environment and is responsible for the safe and efficient handling, loading, and unloading of steel materials and deliveries.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring materials are accurately picked, organised, and dispatched in line with operational requirements, while maintaining strict health and safety standards at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Safe loading and unloading of lorries using overhead crane, forklift, or side loader
- Selecting and arranging steel products to fulfil internal and external orders
- Picking steel sections and plate for production and machining requirements
- Reading and interpreting delivery notes and order documentation
- Manual handling of materials including timber and other components
- Ensuring full compliance with site health & safety procedures at all times
- Organising stock and maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient yard environment
- Supporting general yard operations as required
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Previous experience operating an overhead crane is essential
- Experience operating plant including shunter, forklift truck (FLT), and combi lift is essential
- Forklift truck certification/training is required for this role
- Experience working in a steel or heavy industrial environment is highly desirable
- Strong understanding of health & safety practices
- Ability to work accurately from delivery and order documentation
- Reliable, punctual, and physically fit for manual handling duties
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to work
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Training
Full training will be provided; however, existing licences and experience with overhead cranes, forklifts, and plant machinery are essential for this role.
