How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    MIG Welder (Structural Steel)

    Location: Newcastle upon Tyne

    Agency: Search Consultancy

Payment Terms: Excellent PAYE Rates (Plus Holiday Pay & Pension)

    Position: Long-Term (Temp-to-Perm Contract)

Shift Options: Choice of Day or Night Shifts

Search Consultancy is currently recruiting for an experienced MIG Welder specialising in structural steel to join a well-established fabrication facility in Newcastle. This is a long-term position offering excellent stability, with a direct path from temporary to permanent employment for the right candidate.

We are looking for a high-caliber professional capable of delivering structural-grade welds safely, efficiently, and to exact technical specifications.

    Shift Patterns & Earning Potential

We are offering two distinct shift patterns to suit your availability, both paid at highly competitive PAYE rates:

    Option 1: Night Shift

Schedule: 4 Nights per week (12-hour shifts)

Benefit: Includes a premium shift uplift rate for unsociable hours.

    Option 2: Day Shift

Schedule: 5 Days per week (Standard 42-hour working week)

    Key Responsibilities

MIG Welding: Executing high-quality MIG (GMAW) welding on heavy structural steel components, including beams, columns, trusses, and plates.

Technical Blueprint Reading: Interpreting engineering drawings, weld symbols, and fabrication plans to assemble and weld components accurately.

Multi-Position Welding: Conducting multi-run fillet and butt welds in various positions to structural standards (e.g., BS EN ISO 9606-1 or AWS D1.1).

Fabrication & Prep: Tacking up assemblies, checking alignments against tolerances, and prepping materials (grinding, beveling) prior to welding.

Quality Assurance: Conducting visual inspections of completed welds to ensure zero defects, cracks, or porosity before passing to final inspection.

Safety & Maintenance: Operating heavy fabrication machinery safely, managing gas and wire consumables efficiently, and maintaining a clean bay.

    Requirements

CSCS Card: A valid Blue (Skilled Worker) or Gold (Advanced Craft/Supervisor) CSCS card is required.

Experience: Proven track record as a MIG welder working specifically with heavy structural steel.

Qualifications: Time-served or relevant NVQ/City & Guilds qualifications. Prior or current weld codings (e.g., 3G, 4G) are highly advantageous.

Tools & PPE: Your own standard welding kit (including a responsive auto-darkening mask, chipping hammer, and gauntlets) and 5-point site PPE.

Reliability: A punctual, professional approach to long-term shift work.

Right to Work: Valid right to work in the UK.

    Why Partner with Search?

Temp-to-Perm Progression: This is not a short-term stopgap. The client is looking to invest in long-term staff, offering a secure transition to a permanent contract.

Full PAYE Benefits: Peace of mind with standard PAYE employment, including accrued holiday pay, statutory pension contributions, and no self-assessment or umbrella company stresses.

Flexible Shift Premiums: Boost your earnings with a substantial rate uplift on our 4-night schedule.

Search is an equal opportunities recruiter and we welcome applications from all suitably skilled or qualified applicants, regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion/beliefs, sexual orientation or age
