How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    The Opportunity

We are delighted to be working with a highly regarded, specialist engineering consultancy to source a talented Highway Engineer to join their growing team based in Hertfordshire. This is a fantastic opportunity to step into a role where you will be given real responsibility from day one, working on technically interesting and varied schemes across multiple infrastructure sectors.
Our client has an excellent reputation for delivering complex and innovative design solutions across the UK and internationally. They invest heavily in their people, offering genuine career progression, a supportive team culture, and a flexible hybrid working model.

    The Role

Joining an established and expanding highways team, you will take ownership of scheme delivery from concept through to detailed design and construction support. You will have exposure to a diverse project portfolio spanning rail, power & energy, and traditional highway infrastructure - giving you breadth of experience that is rare in a single role.
    Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

Producing highway engineering designs from feasibility through to detailed design stage
Alignment design and Civil 3D modelling
Highway drainage design and associated calculations
Traffic signs, road markings, pavement, fencing, and VRS design
Preparation of Specifications for Highway Works
Supporting construction teams and site activities as required

    What They're Looking For

    Essential

Minimum of two years' post-graduate experience in civil engineering design within the highways sector
Proficiency in Civil 3D and highway alignment design
Practical experience in highway drainage design
MEng or BEng in Civil Engineering or a related discipline

    Desirable

Exposure to a broad range of highway project types
Experience with specialist highway design software (e.g. Infodrainagefor drainage design)
Familiarity with traffic signs & road markings, pavement, fencing, and VRS design
Experience preparing Specifications for Highway Works

    Why This Opportunity Stands Out

Our client is not your typical consultancy. They have a clear focus on technical excellence and employee development, and that commitment shows in their low staff turnover and loyal team culture. Here's why our candidates who have joined them have stayed:

Real career progression - a clear pathway to take on increased responsibility and develop towards Chartership
Sector variety - exposure to highways works within rail, power & energy, and traditional highway environments
Hybrid working - a genuine flexible model splitting time between office and home
Social culture - active social groups, team events, and a genuine work/life balance ethos
Competitive package - salary, benefits, and development budget commensurate with experience
