How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Job Title: Assistant Head of Department – Construction & Building Services
    Salary: £46,407 per annum (pro rata if part-time)

    Location: Cambridge and Huntingdon (Multi Site)

    Job Role

    As the Assistant Head of Department for Multi-Skills & Trowel Trades, you will support the Head of Department in leading, managing, and enhancing the curriculum for Study Programmes, Apprenticeships, and Adult courses. As the Assistant Head of Department for Multi-Skills & Trowel Trades, you will oversee staff and resources within the Multi-Skills & Trowel Trades area across both the Cambridge and Huntingdon campuses.

    The Assistant Head of Department for Multi-Skills & Trowel Trades, will contribute to improving student outcomes by maintaining high standards of performance, monitoring progress and achievement, and motivating both staff and students.

    Key Responsibilities

    Study Programmes

    Your responsibilities will include:

    * Assisting with course timetabling across the department using a student-centred approach.

    * Chairing course team meetings and ensuring accurate meeting minutes are recorded.

    * Developing and implementing a teaching support cover rota for the department.

    * Supporting and embedding a collaborative approach to planning, preparation, and adaptation of resources to ensure all students reach their full potential.

    * Embedding English and Maths throughout the curriculum and across all study programmes.

    * Monitoring and addressing poor attendance, punctuality, and behaviour in line with their policies to ensure departmental targets are met.

    * Working closely with the MIS team to ensure flexible study programmes are accurately recorded within their timetabling systems.

    * Supporting the recruitment and admission of new learners.

    * Updating course leaflets, prospectus information, and contributing to departmental marketing materials.

    Quality Assurance

    You will:

    * Lead quality assurance activities within the area, ensuring staff engagement with their quality processes and achievement of agreed targets and KPIs.

    * Work with colleagues to develop high-quality inclusive teaching practices and collaborate with the Excellence Coach team to improve delivery standards.

    * Support staff with administrative tasks required for effective course and programme delivery.

    * Ensure assessment methods are inclusive and aligned with awarding body requirements.

    * Develop and implement strategies that promote equality and improve learner recruitment and achievement outcomes.

    Management and Resourcing

    You will:

    * Support the supervision and line management of team members through regular one-to-one meetings.

    * Conduct appraisals for allocated staff members, with overall targets determined by the Head of Department.

    * Support recruitment and selection processes and ensure timely induction of new staff.

    * Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade as required, including work across their different sites.

    Professional Development and Industry Engagement

    You will:

    * Build and maintain strong links with employers and industry professionals.

    * Maintain your own professional development and specialist subject knowledge.

    * Complete mandatory and role-specific training.

    * Work collaboratively with internal and external professionals to support learners with additional needs.

    * Act as the first point of contact for inclusive practices within the department and signpost appropriately.

    * Identify staff training needs and provide feedback to departmental leadership to support coordinated development planning.

    Employee Profile

    Essential Qualifications

    Candidates must:

    * Hold a Level 5 or above teaching qualification (such as DET, DTLLS, Cert Ed, or PGCE).

    * Hold an Assessor Award or equivalent.

    * Hold, or be working towards, an IQA Award or equivalent.

    Desirable Qualifications

    * A management qualification or a construction-related qualification relevant to the curriculum area.

    Essential Experience

    * Extensive experience within an education or training provider and recent teaching experience in a further education setting.

    Desirable Experience

    * Experience leading a team or supervising staff or experience managing study programmes.
