How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Do you want a health and safety role where no two days look the same and where your work genuinely protects people? Based at our Barnet campus, you’ll be a trusted expert at the heart of a busy, diverse college, advising staff and leaders, driving a positive safety culture and making a visible difference every day.

    This role offers the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of impactful projects across a dynamic College environment, including estates development, curriculum expansion, and the ongoing enhancement of health and safety systems and culture. Working closely with the Director of Health & Safety, you’ll have real scope to lead projects, develop your expertise and shape our approach to safety for years to come.

    What You’ll Be Doing

    * Safety culture: Champion and embed a positive H&S culture at all levels, influencing senior leaders and frontline staff alike.

    * Expert advice: Be the go-to for operational H&S guidance across academic and support teams, from risk assessments to compliance queries.

    * Audits & inspections: Plan and deliver college-wide compliance audits, document findings and drive actionable improvements.

    * Incident investigation: Lead investigations into accidents and near misses, identify root causes and ensure lessons are learned.

    * Fire & emergency: Coordinate fire safety management, drills and warden training across all campuses.

    * Training & awareness: Develop and deliver toolbox talks, briefings and H&S training to keep staff skilled and compliant.

    * Risk management: Support managers in producing robust risk assessments and maintain a central register.

    * Deputy role: Act as deputy to the Director of H&S, including statutory notifications (e.g. RIDDOR) and external liaison with the HSE, insurers and contractors.

    What You’ll Bring

    Essential

    * NEBOSH National General Certificate / Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety

    * IOSH membership

    * Proven experience in a similar H&S advisory role with solid knowledge of current legislation

    * Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report and strategy writing

    * Confident influencer able to persuade, advise and direct H&S activities at all levels

    * Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex issues

    * Full driving licence and access to own vehicle (travel across sites is required)

    * Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office

    * Self-motivated, well-organised, and comfortable managing competing priorities

    * Commitment to equality, diversity, safeguarding and continuous improvement

    Even Better If You Have…

    * Experience in an FE, HE or education environment

    * Experience managing fire safety, construction oversight or offsite activity risk

    * Experience contributing to H&S accreditations or external inspections
