How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Are you a sports professional who is passionate about teaching and wants to work in a team that genuinely shares your commitment to learner success? Do you want a role that offers real variety, clear professional support and genuine opportunities to grow your practice and your responsibility? If so, we think you will feel right at home here.

As our new Sports Lecturer, you will teach and inspire learners across a wide range of ages and abilities, planning and delivering high-quality sessions, schemes of learning and assessments aligned to departmental and awarding body expectations. You will work within a collaborative, student-centred course team culture where lecturers support each other operationally, share responsibility for learner progress and actively contribute to curriculum development and quality.

This is a dynamic role that goes beyond the classroom. You will embed new learning technologies, develop resources, build links with employers, schools and the local community, and contribute to recruitment and open events. You will also take part in the College's Teaching Observation and appraisal processes and have access to ongoing CPD to keep your subject specialism current — with the opportunity to step into personal tutoring and, where ready, subject or course leadership.

    About Barnet and Southgate College

We change lives, empower individuals and connect communities.

We are an ambitious, forward-thinking further education college in North London, proud to serve diverse communities across Barnet, Southgate and beyond. Our 2030 Vision is bold: to be a leading provider of learning and skills development, fostering exceptional educational experiences, driven by innovation, collaboration and excellence.

Our Sports team is a supportive, student-focused department with structured ways of working and a genuine commitment to quality. Lecturers work closely through course teams, meetings and agreed cover arrangements, with clear processes for tracking, quality assurance and inspection preparation. You will be joining a team where your professional development is taken seriously and where there is a clear route to taking on broader responsibility as you grow in the role.

    What You'll Be Doing

Here is a flavour of what you will be getting involved in:

    * Inspiring teaching: Plan and deliver high-quality, motivating and inclusive sessions to learners across a range of ages, abilities and programmes, including BTEC and YMCA qualifications, adapting your approach to suit individual students.

    * Curriculum contribution: Contribute enthusiastically to curriculum development as part of the course team, developing schemes of learning, lesson plans, assignments, assessments and resource materials in line with departmental and awarding body requirements.

    * Learner success: Track and monitor learner progress, maintain accurate records and QA data, and work with Student Services and learning support to ensure every student has access to the help they need to achieve.

    * Pastoral support: Act as personal tutor for one or more groups of students, providing guidance, monitoring progress and supporting learners in navigating challenges and planning their next steps.

    * Quality and inspection: Contribute to internal quality assurance processes, Teaching Observation and appraisal, and preparation for external quality assurance and inspection — keeping the provision quality-ready at all times.

    * Wider engagement: Develop meaningful links with employers, schools and the local community, and support recruitment, open events and student enrichment activities.

    * Leadership opportunity: Where ready, take on subject or course leadership responsibilities, contributing to the department's continued development and improvement.

    What You'll Bring

We are looking for an energetic, student-focused sports professional who is committed to high-quality teaching and professional growth.

    Essential

    * A degree or equivalent vocational qualification in Physical Education, Sports or a related subject

    * Commitment to achieving a PGCE, CertEd or equivalent teaching qualification within the first 3 years of appointment

    * Strong experience of working with young people in a position of responsibility

    * Experience of teaching BTEC and YMCA qualifications to a variety of student groups including 16-19, mature students and flexible learning groups

    * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

    * Ability to offer pastoral guidance and support to students

    * Commitment to widening participation and to equality, diversity and inclusion

    * Energy, enthusiasm and a positive attitude

    * Personal resilience and integrity, with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

    * Willingness to work flexibly, including contributing to open events and community engagement activities

    Even Better If You Have...

    * An assessor qualification (e.g. CAVA or equivalent)

    * A Quality Assurance qualification (e.g. A1 or equivalent)

    * Assessor and moderator experience across a range of sports qualifications

    * Experience of subject or course leadership

    Potential Interview Dates

    Week commencing 15th June 2026.
