How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Controls Engineer – South Yorkshire / Sheffield – PLCs / Process Control / System Integration – £50-65k
    Samuel Frank is recruiting for an experienced Controls Engineer to join a well-established and growing South Yorkshire based system integrator. This Controls Engineer role will suit somebody who enjoys developing PLC software from scratch, writing high-quality technical documentation and getting projects over the line through successful commissioning work on customer sites.
    The successful Controls Engineer will join a highly skilled team delivering projects across process industries including utilities, manufacturing, chemicals, energy and nuclear. The company has an excellent reputation in the market and a very strong pipeline of work for 2026 and beyond.
    Key aspects of the Controls Engineer role include –
    * The Controls Engineer will design and develop PLC and SCADA software from scratch for a range of process control projects
    * Will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle from initial design through to commissioning and handover
    * Experience writing detailed functional design specifications, test documentation and technical manuals is important for this Controls Engineer role
    * Controls Engineer will carry out on-site commissioning work across mainly regional customer sites
    * Projects are technically interesting and varied with a good mix of office-based software development and practical commissioning activity
    * The business has a collaborative engineering culture where experienced Controls Engineers work closely together to solve problems and support each other technically
    * The company has invested heavily in its offices and infrastructure and offers clear progression
    * Approximate split is 85% office based and 15% on customer sites with very limited overnight stays required
    The successful Controls Engineer is likely to have –
    * Strong PLC programming experience, ideally Siemens TIA Portal although other PLC platforms will also be considered
    * Previous experience working for a systems integrator, OEM or process control related engineering business
    * A background working on process control, manufacturing, utilities, energy or similar industrial automation projects
    * A UK driving licence and full eligibility to work in the UK without sponsorship
    This Controls Engineer role is commutable from Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Chesterfield, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Worksop and surrounding areas.
