NOW Education is currently recruiting for a Trauma-Informed Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist SEMH school in Kings Norton, Birmingham.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a nurturing and supportive learning environment that focuses on helping pupils overcome barriers to education. The school supports children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, many of whom have experienced trauma, disrupted education, or behavioural challenges.
We are seeking a resilient, patient and empathetic individual who is passionate about supporting vulnerable young people and making a lasting difference in their lives. This is a full-time role with the opportunity to transition from temporary to a permanent position for the right person.
The Role
As a Trauma-Informed Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and to support pupils both academically and emotionally. You will play a key role in helping pupils regulate their emotions, engage with learning, and develop positive relationships in a structured and safe environment. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone looking to make a meaningful impact on pupils who need it most.
Key Responsibilities
• Support students on a 1:1 and small group basis
• Implement a trauma-informed approach to support behaviour and emotional regulation
• Build trusting, positive relationships with pupils who may display challenging behaviour
• Promote a calm, structured and supportive learning environment
• Work collaboratively with teaching staff, SEN professionals and pastoral teams
• Support pupils’ social development and encourage engagement in learning
Requirements
• Experience working within a trauma-informed or SEMH setting (essential)
• Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or Health and Social Care (essential)
• Strong behaviour management skills and a calm, consistent approach
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Able to commit to full-time
• A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs
