Job Type: Contract
Location: Bristol or Bridgwater (Hybrid Working)
Duration: 7 month contract | Potential for extension
Pay rate: Competitive
IR35 Status: Inside IR35
Hours of work: 37.5 per week | Full Time
The Role
We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer (Pressure Systems & Compliance) to support a major, highly regulated infrastructure programme. This role sits within a specialist pressure compliance and quality function and focuses on ensuring that pressure systems and structural integrity requirements are met across defined project scopes.
The position is not a design role. Instead, it centres on technical compliance, assurance, and oversight, working closely with project teams, suppliers, and regulators to ensure safety and regulatory requirements are achieved throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the development and ongoing management of pressure systems compliance and structural integrity requirements for assigned projects or work packages.
* Ensure applicable policies, processes, and contractual requirements are implemented and delivered to the required quality.
* Provide technical advice and decision‑making related to pressure systems regulation and structural integrity, escalating issues where required.
* Act as a single point of contact for pressure compliance matters within the assigned scope.
* Work closely with Project Managers, engineering teams, supply chain partners, and third‑party organisations to support compliant delivery.
* Support engagement with regulators and contribute to safety case and conformity assessment activities.
* Maintain personal SQEP (Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person) status in line with industry requirements.
* Support wider project activities as required, depending on workload and experience.
* Travel may be required, predominantly to mainland Europe.
About You
You will have a strong mechanical engineering background and experience working with pressure systems in a regulated environment. You will be comfortable operating in a project‑driven, multi‑stakeholder setting and able to balance technical compliance with delivery needs.
Essential Experience & Knowledge
* Mechanical engineering experience within a highly regulated industry (e.g. nuclear, power generation, oil & gas, petrochemical).
* Experience with pressure systems, pressure equipment, and structural integrity.
* Understanding of relevant design and manufacturing codes (e.g. RCC‑M or ASME).
* Experience working with suppliers, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
* Ability to work effectively in a matrix and multidisciplinary project environment.
Skills & Attributes
* Strong organisational and communication skills.
* Confident engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior project teams.
* Practical, solutions‑focused approach with an ability to work independently.
* Sound technical judgement and awareness of own limits, with a willingness to seek support when required.
Qualifications
* Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering/science discipline.
* Chartered Engineer status is desirable
