How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Hands-on operations role in cutting-edge scientific manufacturing

This small and well-established engineering company develops and manufactures bespoke and low-volume scientific equipment used by public and private laboratories around the world. These instruments require very particular components and custom mechanical and electronic parts. As a result, procurement and supply chain management is critical. With their current operations manager looking to retire shortly they are seeking someone to take on these responsibilities.

Due to the small size of the company this role has a wider remit than might be typical for an operations role. You will start the procurement process with engineering drawings and BOMs and working with the engineers to ensure components are suitable and contract manufacturers produce parts correctly. At the other end of the process, you will be key to ensuring instruments are assembled and delivered to customers intact and in a timely fashion. While many of these steps will be conventional procurements, compliance and logistics -type tasks, there will be surprises and so you will need to be adaptable and flexible.

    Requirements:

    * Commercial experience with procurement, supply chain or operations in a manufacturing environment. Ideally for scientific instruments or in another low-volume high-value sector.

    * Experience working in small companies and an understanding that you will pick up various responsibilities over time that aren’t directly related to your job title.

    * Full and unrestricted rights to work in the UK.

While not required, a technical / engineering background would be beneficial for both understanding manufacturing requirements and general communication with the rest of the team.

The work environment is friendly and supportive and features old traditions such as the Friday pub lunch. You will be provided a large degree of autonomy and aspects of the role will require you to work independently for extended periods. With lots happening on-site requiring your input, including manufacture and assembly, remote or hybrid working is not possible. The remunerations package is good, and the office is conveniently situated close to road and rail links.
