The Betting and Gaming Council is the standards body for the betting and gaming industry and its members include betting shops, casinos and online betting and gaming companies.
Betting and gaming is a key part of the UK’s dynamic and diverse leisure and entertainment industry. The industry contributes over £4 billion in taxes to the UK Exchequer and provides work for over 109,000 people. As the single industry body, we work with our members, large and small, to raise standards, create a culture of safer gambling and build public and institutional trust in our world class industry.
Established in 2019, the BGC puts the customer first to drive standards over and above regulatory requirements to ensure a safer, fairer betting and gaming experience for all.
The opportunity: Head of Research and Insights
The BGC has built a strong and professional team delivering for our members and their strategic priorities. We are now seeking a Head of Research and Insights to join our Policy, Research and Insights team to help take our policy development work to the next level.
This is a key time for the industry, the successful candidate will play an important role in our response and development work, as the industry looks beyond the Gambling Act Review White Paper.
The role is full time, based in our offices in Westminster, competitive salary based on experience.
About you
You must be well versed in research and analytical methods, with a proven track record of leading research tasks independently, from concept to conclusion. You will have previous experience in a research or insights role, and be able to demonstrate independent leadership working with data and carrying out research and analysis. You will be a confident communicator, both in person and in writing, with experience of working closely with stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds.
You will be comfortable in analysing documents and publications, and formulating responses to consultations with tight deadlines. You will be able to critically analyse reports and provide succinct and accurate summaries for a range of stakeholders. You will have excellent organisational skills and be confident in handling multiple policy and technical projects simultaneously.
Knowledge of the betting and gaming industry is desirable. The willingness and ability to learn fast, and apply that learning to help the BGC achieve its objectives is essential.
Job Description
Job Title: Head of Research and Insights
Location: Westminster, London (hybrid)
Employment type: Permanent, full-time
Reports to: Director of Policy
Job Purpose
· To independently conduct research as necessary to support the aims of the PRI and wider BGC team.
· To lead within the PRI team on analysing and critiquing research published by a range of sources, supporting the BGC communications and public affairs team in their responses.
· To be the main conduit for industry analysis and knowledge within the BGC team.
Key Responsibilities
· To carry out research projects related to areas of interest for the PRI and wider BGC team.
· To provide critical analysis of publications relevant to the industry and develop recommendations drawn from evidence and data.
· To work with members and external stakeholders to deliver on the BGC’s data repository work and maintain a strong knowledge and evidence base within the BGC.
· To conduct regular analysis of industry trend and developments and advise the BGC team on required actions in response.
· To respond to Government and Gambling Commission consultations and provide in depth critical analysis of the evidence base contained within.
· To work with the BGC communications and public affairs teams and identify workstreams to support with our external engagement.
· To work with members on research and insights and Chair meetings as required to drive industry action.
· To liaise with other industry trade associations and identify areas of mutually beneficial data sharing. Also to report back to the BGC team on the priorities and activities of these trade associations and how this could impact/complement the BGC.
· To maintain strong relationships with parallel stakeholders within members, the Gambling Commission and Government departments.
· To act as the representative for the BGC at external conferences and working groups, and report back on those groups to the Director of Policy for consideration and decision-making.

· Developed understanding of data analysis and research protocols, including how to analyse and critique research methodology.
· Prior experience authoring or co-authoring reports.

· Confident communicator with different stakeholders, both external and internal.

· Working knowledge of the betting and gaming industry would be desirable but not essential.
