How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    About the Company

    The Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM) is responsible for the technical leadership, coordination, and assurance of all engineering activities across track renewals, permanent way (P-Way), and overhead line equipment (OLE) projects. The role ensures that all works are designed, planned, and delivered in compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and project requirements.


    About the Role

    The Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM) is responsible for the technical leadership, coordination, and assurance of all engineering activities across track renewals, permanent way (P-Way), and overhead line equipment (OLE) projects. The role ensures that all works are designed, planned, and delivered in compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and project requirements.


    Responsibilities

    • Lead and manage all engineering aspects of track renewals, P-Way, and OLE works.
    • Act as the primary engineering interface between the contractor, client, and stakeholders.
    • Ensure designs comply with Network Rail standards and relevant legislation.
    • Oversee design approvals, technical submissions, and engineering assurance processes.
    • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and subcontractors.
    • Provide technical guidance during planning and delivery phases.
    • Ensure safe systems of work and adherence to health & safety requirements.
    • Manage engineering risks and implement mitigation strategies.
    • Review and approve method statements, risk assessments, and work package plans.
    • Support project delivery teams in resolving technical issues on site.


    Qualifications

    • Degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
    • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) with a relevant institution (e.g. Institution of Civil Engineers).
    • Valid PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification.
    • CEM accreditation (desirable/required depending on project).


    Required Skills

    • Proven experience in a CEM or senior engineering role within rail infrastructure.
    • Strong knowledge of track renewals, P-Way, and OLE systems.
    • Familiarity with Network Rail standards and engineering assurance processes.
    • Experience working on major rail projects or complex infrastructure schemes.
    • Ability to manage multidisciplinary engineering teams.
    • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.


    Preferred Skills

    • Experience on large-scale rail hubs or interchange projects.
    • Knowledge of integration between track, civils, and OLE systems.
    • Previous involvement in high-profile UK rail programmes (e.g. HS2 Ltd or major station upgrades).
