How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Role: Director of Music

    Start Date: September 2026

    Location: Hertfordshire (Hemel Hempstead area)

    Contract Term: Permanent

    Salary: Competitive with possible accommodation

A leading independent prep school in Hertfordshire is seeking a Director of Music for September 2026. This is a full time and permanent role.

This independent prep school is a thriving, busy school enjoying a famous reputation in its field. The School prepares children for entry, at both 13+ and 11+, into the leading independent senior schools. The School prides itself in academic excellence, whilst being non-selective at entry. The pupils have achieved outstanding results and have competed successfully for scholarships and awards at prestigious Senior Schools. At the same time the School provides excellent pastoral care, to ensure that pupils flourish in line with our ethos of encouraging them to be confident, happy and successful.

The Head is seeking to appoint an inspirational, highly motivated and enthusiastic Director of Music who will lead the Music Department and will build on all the successes that the pupils and staff have achieved.

The role will entail teaching Music across the School from Reception to Year 8 and Music is one of the key areas in which the school's pupils excel. Pupils have gained some of the most prestigious music scholarships at Senior Schools and have consistently excelled at recognised examinations, such as ABRSM and Trinity College of Music. For everyone at the School playing music and singing is fun. The children simply enjoy learning and performing, with astounding success. You will also be responsible for leading and organising the department, orchestras and groups. It is hoped you will be proficient in the piano and able to accompany.

If you have a passion for Music and would like to lead the Music department at an outstanding independent prep school in Hertfordshire, please send your CV to Duncan or contact him for more information.

Knight Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants for the post must be willing to undergo child protection screening, including reference checks with previous employers and an enhanced DBS check
