1. Vehicle Inspection and Diagnosis
* Perform routine and thorough inspections of HGVs to detect faults or wear and tear.
* Use diagnostic tools and software to identify mechanical or electronic issues.
* Check systems such as brakes, engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, and exhaust.
2. Maintenance and Repair
* Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks like oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.
* Repair or replace faulty components, including engines, brakes, gearboxes, and electrical systems.
* Ensure all repairs meet manufacturer specifications and legal safety standards.
3. Electrical and Electronic Systems
* Diagnose and repair electrical faults, including wiring, sensors, and onboard computers.
* Work with complex electronic systems such as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBS (Electronic Braking System), and ECU (Engine Control Unit).
4. Testing and Quality Control
* Conduct road tests and system checks to ensure repairs have been successful.
* Maintain records of inspections, repairs, and service history.
* Ensure vehicles comply with legal and safety regulations, including MOT tests and fleet standards.
5. Health and Safety Compliance
* Follow strict health and safety procedures when working with heavy machinery.
* Ensure all workshop tools and equipment are used correctly and safely.
* Keep the workshop clean, organized, and compliant with health and safety regulations.
6. Customer and Fleet Communication
* Communicate with drivers or fleet managers about vehicle issues and necessary repairs.
* Provide technical advice and cost estimates for repairs.
* Recommend preventative maintenance to extend vehicle lifespan and reduce downtime.
7. Continuous Learning
* Stay updated on new HGV technologies, including hybrid and electric heavy vehicles.
* Keep up with industry regulations, standards, and best practices.
8. Skills and Qualifications Typically Required:
* NVQ or equivalent in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance or Mechanical Engineering.
* Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electronic systems.
* Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
* Physical fitness and ability to work in confined or elevated spaces.
