How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Senior Researcher in Sensor Development.

Location: Science Creates St Philips, Bristol, UK (On-site full time)
Position: Full Time (37.5 hours/week), fixed term in the first instance (1 year) with a possibility of converting to permanent role which will be reviewed after 6 months.

Salary: £(phone number removed) per annum (pro rata)
    Expected start date: ASAP

Carbometrics is a specialist chemistry company based in Bristol, UK. Our core competency is the design, synthesis and derivatisation of highly selective and robust carbohydrate-binding molecules. Our mission is to help people with diabetes to live more normal and longer lives. We are using our proprietary Biomimetic Glucose Binding Molecules (GBM) to develop a new glucose sensor chemistry that will enable market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM).

Our technology is based on over 20 years of cutting-edge research, pioneered by Professor Anthony Davis’ group at the University of Bristol (see: Davis et al., Nature Chemistry, 11, 52-56, 2019). Carbometrics’ goal is to exploit our GBM technology to realise a highly robust and accurate glucose sensing platform that can be used to create a market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) solution. The company was set up after the founders sold their first company, Ziylo, to Novo Nordisk, which is using the same platform to develop smart insulins.

    About the role

Carbometrics is in an exciting phase of scaling up production and testing of our glucose sensors using automated experimental control systems and data analysis. The successful candidate will work as part of the scientific team to support the sensor development and testing team. To thrive in this role, the successful candidate will be an adaptable chemist who is confident in a laboratory setting.

They will be able to understand the molecular components used in creating our sensors, prepare solutions of sensor formulations for deposition onto a target substrate and analyse data gathered from testing sensors in our custom automated fluidic apparatus.

The role is based within our innovative team in Bristol’s only dedicated scientific incubator. Carbometrics is a young, growing company and will offer the successful candidate an interesting and enjoyable work environment with a highly motivated team of scientists plus an opportunity to grow and develop scientific skills and experience. On-site training in all areas of work will be provided where necessary (e.g. laboratory work such as preparation of sensor formulations, operation of equipment, running of data analysis), so we encourage candidates to apply even if they do not meet all criteria.

    Job Description:

Designing and conducting sensor experiments involving custom-built fluidic devices with integrated optoelectronics in an analytical chemistry laboratory environment.
Managing hardware setup including pumps, solutions and control software for experiments.
Optimising sensor formulations (mixtures of molecular components, particles, polymers and solvents) to maximise sensor properties such as response magnitude and stability.
Creation of sensors using industry standard thin film deposition techniques (e.g. bar coating, jet dispensing, dip coating, spin coating etc)
Corroborating laboratory observations and analytical data to inform improvements to sensor design cycles and understanding the underlying sensor chemistry.
Analysing experimental data using in-house developed Python analysis tools and presenting findings to the team on a weekly basis.
Collaborating closely with a team of synthetic chemists, researchers and engineers to enhance sensor technologies and experiment methodologies.

    What We're Looking For:

Qualification at undergraduate level (Bachelor’s, Master’s) in Chemistry.
Further qualification (e.g. PhD) or experience in relevant field (e.g. polymer films, materials science, optical sensors, analytical, physical or supramolecular chemistry etc).
Hands-on experience in laboratory settings, particularly with handling of custom synthesised molecular components, solvents, polymer films, fluidics and sensor technologies.
Ability to consistently prepare and calibrate solutions with precise quantities of components.
Familiarity with Python or other programming languages and experience with data analysis.
Ability to work with analysis scripts and software in Windows and Linux.
Excellent problem-solving abilities and a keen attention to detail.
Strong communication skills and the ability to present complex data in a concise manner.

    Eligibility and Expectations

To qualify for this position, you will need to be authorised to live and work in the UK.
You must have respect for others and a commitment and enthusiasm for high standards and continuous improvement.
At Carbometrics we value diversity. We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome employees who meet the requirements of the job, regardless of gender, ethnic origin, disability, age, religion or sexual orientation.
