Job Purpose
1. To manage an occupational therapy team providing assessments and equipment and adaptations to facilitate and promote people to remain independent within their homes and the local community.
2. To oversee the development of occupational therapy and sensory support plans and assess and advise on the need for equipment and adaptations and assistive technology to promote the independence of children, young people and adults with disabilities.
3. To build and maintain relationships with strategic partners, service users and other service areas within the Council to ensure the delivery of Enabling Independence agenda and aims.
Specific Accountabilities of the Role
4. Manage and develop the Enabling Independence Team to provide a person-centred service that meets the needs of service users, young people and adults to enable them to optimise and maintain their independence.
5. Ensure that the Occupational Therapy process works effectively in partnership with service users, families and carers.
6. Ensure that the Enabling Independence Team undertakes assessments of need and evaluations of risk in partnership with service users, families and carers.
7. Ensure that risk assessments in relation to moving and handling tasks are carried out in partnership with service users, families and carers.
8. Positively contribute to the achievement of joint working by referring, liaising, consulting and collaborating effectively with other professionals; working with the statutory, voluntary and private sectors to identify and meet the needs of service users, families and carers.
9. Contribute to and lead multi-disciplinary assessments and case conferences as required.
10. Use expert knowledge and skills to provide support and advice and teach independent living techniques to the team.
11. Work within a multi-agency setting to contribute to the process of providing major adaptations including assessment, clinical reasoning, providing written and drawn specifications, completion checks and liaison with technical officers and other agencies.
12. Be responsible for the effective allocation of cases and for overseeing the timely review and closure of cases within the team.
13. Be responsible for undertaking regular case audits to ensure the highest standards of both quality and performance are being met by the service.
14. Either provide professional case supervision, guidance, support and expert advice to all staff in the Enabling Independence Team, or ensure it is provided.
15. Maintain professional standards in accordance with the Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and Professional Standards for Occupational Therapy Practice. Regularly participate in the local supervision and performance management process and positively contribute to the Continuing Professional Development of the Occupational Therapy Service.
16. Maintain high standards of record keeping on the Council’s electronic systems, ensuring that all information is timely, accurate and complete to ensure the service meets all statutory recording requirements.
17. Participate in investigating safeguarding concerns as appropriate and in accordance with departmental requirements.
