How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job title: Environmental Lead
    Job Type: Contract
    IR35 Status: Inside IR35

    Hybrid/Remote Working: Hybrid - 3 days onsite, 2 days remote
    Hours of work: 40 hours per week

    Role information:

    Join a leading nuclear sector environmental team and take ownership of environmental compliance, permitting, and safety case input across high profile projects.
    We're looking for an experienced Environmental Lead to act as a trusted advisor across environmental regulation, permitting, and hazard analysis on a major regulated site.

    Lead environmental permitting (RSR, Installation/PPC, GHG) and manage variations, renewals & compliance.

    Responsibilities:

    Regulatory Compliance & Permitting

    Act as the site technical authority for environmental Permits on projects including:
    RSR Permit (radioactive discharges, disposals, waste management).
    Installation Permit (PPC) covering industrial activities, emissions, and pollution prevention.
    Greenhouse Gas (GHG) permit and related emissions monitoring, reporting and verification duties.
    Ensure all Permit conditions, improvement conditions, limits and reporting requirements are understood on a project by project basis.
    Lead on Permit variations, renewals, compliance assessments and communication with regulators (EA/SEPA/NRW as applicable), if required (or sufficiently brief SFL Environment Manager).
    Ensure requirements for monitoring are captured.Environmental Safety Case & HAZANs

    Provide environmental input to nuclear safety case, ensuring environmental risks are identified, assessed and appropriately controlled.
    Lead or contribute to Environmental HAZANs, including systematic analysis of environmental hazards, source terms, pathways, consequence assessments and mitigations.
    Ensure environmental protection measures align with ALARP/BAT principles and regulatory expectations.
    Support incident analysis and learning for environmental aspects. Environmental Impact Assessment and Land-Use Planning

    Provide input into Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) undertaken under Town and Country Planning legislation, if required.
    Support planning applications, scoping reports, environmental statements and liaison with planning authorities (or sufficiently brief SFL Planning lead).
    Articulate environmental risks, impacts, mitigations and monitoring strategies as part of statutory processes. COMAH Compliance

    Maintain awareness and technical understanding of COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) requirements and how they apply on projects.
    Provide environmental expertise to COMAH safety reports, environmental consequence assessments, and emergency planning on projects.
    Support demonstration of prevention, mitigation and response capability for major environmental accidents. ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS)

    Support integration of ISO 14001 requirements into project phases.
    Ensure that project environmental risks, impacts, and compliance obligations are identified and managed in line with the EMS.
    Work with project teams and contractors to embed environmental controls, monitoring arrangements, and construction‑phase environmental management procedures.
    Contribute to maintaining accurate EMS documented information, particularly as it relates to construction activities, supply chain interfaces, and project‑specific controls.
    Identify and help drive corrective and preventive actions to ensure continual improvement and alignment with ISO 14001 principles during project delivery.
    Support the transfer of ISO 14001 requirements to the SFL Environmental compliance advisor as the project progresses into physical works onsite, ensuring alignment to SFL site processes and requirements. Stakeholder, Regulator & Community Engagement

    Act as a point of contact for environmental issues with regulators and external stakeholders where required.
    Communicate environmental performance, risks and improvements in a clear and transparent manner.
    Support engagement with local communities where required (e.g., Permits, EIAs, discharges, environmental performance).
    Qualifications/Experience Required

    Degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering-or equivalent experience.
    Strong knowledge of environmental permitting, nuclear safety case requirements, HAZANs, COMAH, EIA and ISO 14001.
    Experience in a regulated/high hazard environment (nuclear preferred).
    Excellent communication, reporting and analytical skills.
    Ability to manage multiple projects independently.

    Desirable:
    Membership of IEMA/SRP/CIWEM.
    Experience with regulatory submissions.
    Knowledge of radioactive waste management and sustainability practices.
    Experience working on multifunctional or nuclear sites.
