How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Senior Civil Engineer
    Peterborough

Are you looking to take the next step in your career while making a genuine difference to local communities and the environment? Do you want to play a key role in restoring, enhancing and protecting natural environments while helping to deliver resilience to climate change?

With an increasing pipeline of secured work and a strong focus on delivering through local teams, the Peterborough office is building its in-house design capability to support senior staff and manage schemes as they move from appraisal into detailed design. As projects continue to come through, there is a clear push to grow capacity and embed strong technical leadership within the team and there is now a requirement for a Senior Civil Engineer to help lead and strengthen the office as its design workload continues to grow. The business is delivering projects that create lasting benefits for communities and the environment, working on long-term frameworks with the Environment Agency and alongside larger national programmes across the UK.

You will join an award-winning environmental and engineering Consultancy that places innovation, sustainability and resilience at the centre of its work. The organisation operates under an independent, staff-owned stewardship model that promotes long-term thinking and sustained investment in people, skills and technology. It offers a collaborative and supportive culture, with clear pathways for professional development.

Based in Peterborough, you will work closely with multidisciplinary specialists including coastal modellers, reservoir engineers, geotechnical engineers, ecologists and geomorphologists. You will lead and coordinate teams delivering flood risk management schemes, river restoration and natural flood management projects, nature-based solutions, renewable energy infrastructure and reservoir improvements. The role combines delivery leadership with hands-on technical input across appraisal, outline and detailed design, and construction support.

Operating within a fast-paced Consultancy environment, you will work with public, private and third-sector clients, including local authorities and other public bodies. An understanding of public-sector governance, funding mechanisms and decision-making processes will be valuable in supporting projects from feasibility through to construction. You will provide technical leadership, develop sustainable and resilient solutions, and champion innovation in digital design tools and workflows.

You will take responsibility for end-to-end project management, including programme and budget control, risk management and contractual administration. Experience in the practical application of the NEC4 suite of contracts will be advantageous in supporting collaborative delivery and commercial awareness. You will coordinate multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors, build strong client relationships, lead Safety in Design in accordance with CDM regulations, and ensure compliance with environmental legislation and best practice.

Strong technical experience in civil engineering design is essential, particularly in earthworks, drainage design, retaining structures and headwalls. Experience in natural flood management, sustainable urban drainage systems, scour assessments for highways or rail structures, hydraulic modelling and Flood Risk Assessment would be beneficial. An interest in coding or parametric modelling tools such as Python or Dynamo would also be welcomed. The role will involve site visits across the UK, including occasional overnight stays.

You will hold a degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline and a full UK driving licence. You will ideally be Chartered, or approaching professional review, with a relevant professional body such as the Institution of Civil Engineers. A key part of the role will be mentoring and developing junior engineers, supporting their progression and helping to shape a strong, capable local design team in the region.
