How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

This respected, employee‑owned planning and design consultancy is actively involved in shaping large‑scale, strategic developments, including plans for over 150,000 new homes across the UK. Working with a broad client base that includes leading master developers, blue‑chip organisations, landowners, Government bodies, and local authorities, the studio delivers high‑quality spatial and place‑making solutions across a diverse range of sites and planning contexts.

The practice is recognised for its collaborative, design‑led, and outcome‑focused approach, combining strong strategic thinking with creativity and consensus‑building. Urban Designers are given the opportunity to work across a wide project portfolio, avoiding narrow specialisms or being pigeonholed, while playing a meaningful role in shaping high‑quality, sustainable places that create long‑term value.

    Role Overview

The Urban Designer will work closely with experienced masterplanning, planning, mapping, and graphic communications teams, contributing design‑led thinking to complex development and regeneration projects. The role offers a balance of collaboration and autonomy, allowing individuals to take ownership of design workstreams, contribute creatively to spatial strategies, and apply strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to deliver well‑designed, deliverable outcomes for a wide range of clients. This position would suit an Urban Designer looking to work at the interface of planning, design, and delivery within a supportive, employee‑owned environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Preparing and contributing to masterplans, urban design frameworks, and spatial strategies
    • Supporting place‑making and large‑scale development projects from concept through to delivery
    • Producing high‑quality design material, including layout drawings, diagrams, and illustrative content
    • Working closely with planners, architects, landscape architects, and engineers to coordinate outputs
    • Engaging with clients, stakeholders, and local authorities to support design‑led planning outcomes
    • Supporting design codes, parameter plans, and spatial guidance documents
    • Mentoring and supporting junior team members where appropriate

    Requirements

The practice is looking for Urban Designers with experience in either consultancy or local authority environments, with demonstrable and transferable skills, particularly within the following areas:

    • Masterplanning and urban design for residential‑led, mixed‑use, or commercial developments
    • Strong understanding of place‑making principles, urban form, and spatial quality
    • Experience supporting planning applications through design‑led documentation
    • Ability to work collaboratively within multi‑disciplinary teams
    • Confident producing clear design narratives, diagrams, and visually strong outputs
    • Experience coordinating design inputs to support deliverable development proposals

    What’s on Offer

    • Competitive salary in the region of £40,000 to £50,000, depending on experience
    • Hybrid working arrangements
    • Generous annual leave allowance, with additional long‑service leave
    • Excellent pension scheme
    • Mobility allowance
    • Discretionary performance‑related bonus
    • Employee Ownership Trust, with an annual Trust Award recognising each individual’s stake in the business
    • Fully funded professional subscriptions, training, and a strong commitment to CPD and long‑term career development
    • Company‑wide study trips, often overseas, alongside annual away days and a variety of social, cultural, and sporting activities
    • A collaborative, people‑focused culture with additional benefits available
