How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    The starting salary for this position is £41,585 per annum based on a 36 hour working week.

    We are recruiting for two Senior Coroner's Officers to manage a team of Coroner's Officers covering the county: working with the Police, Hospital Trusts and Funeral Directors, based in Woking.

    Surrey County Council provides the administrative support to the Senior Coroner in the operation of the Coroner's Court and importantly, supporting bereaved families.

    In this role, you will manage the effective progression of referrals, investigations, and inquest cases, ensuring the team is supported to deliver a high‑quality service to bereaved families. You will also hold your own caseload, working directly with the Coroner responsible for conducting inquests and investigations, and will participate in the on‑call rota and forensic post-mortems.

    Recent experience of working as a Coroner's Officer in a coronial service, an investigator in the police, legal profession or other investigatory body
    Ability to build quality working relationships with key partners to ensure SLAs are met
    Confident and empathetic in working with partners and other key stakeholders, including the public
    Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate complex issues to a wide range of audiencesTo apply, we request that you submit a CV and you will be asked the following 4 questions:

    Please describe your recent experience working as a Coroner's Officer, police investigator, legal professional, or in another investigatory role.

    Describe a situation where you had to communicate complex or sensitive information to a wide range of audiences. How did you tailor your approach to ensure clarity and understanding?
    Tell us about a time you engaged with the public or another key stakeholder during a difficult or emotional situation.
