How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Apprentice GPS Operative – Start Your Career in Highways Data & Surveying

Location: Penkridge based with Nationwide travel, working away and night shifts required
    Contract: Full-time Apprenticeship
Salary: £85 per shift + allowances + great benefits

Kick-start your career with Carnell – where every journey matters.

At Carnell, we’re passionate about keeping the UK’s road network safe, efficient, and futureready. As leaders in specialist maintenance and support services, we’re committed to maintaining the infrastructure that keeps the nation moving.

We’re now looking for an enthusiastic Apprentice GPS Operative to join our Water Management Services Department and become part of our experienced survey team. Due to site requirements, you will need to be over the age of 18 to apply.

    🚀 About the Role

This is a brilliant opportunity for someone starting out in their career who enjoys problemsolving, working outdoors, and being part of a collaborative team.
You’ll play a key role in capturing drainage asset data across the UK’s highways network using GPS handheld equipment and bespoke survey software.

Every day will be different — and you’ll be supported throughout your journey with full training, mentoring, and development opportunities.

    🔧 What You’ll Do

As an Apprentice GPS Operative, you will:

    *

Receive comprehensive training to develop your technical and surveying skills

    *

Carry out drainage asset inventory, condition surveys and mapping

    *

Use GPS handheld devices and Carnell’s bespoke software to capture accurate data

    *

Apply guidance from CD 535, CS 551 and drainage data standards (training provided)

    *

Work a rotating shift pattern including days, nights, weekends and overtime

    *

Maintain strong quality control and adjust work where necessary

    *

Communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues and clients

    *

Participate in team meetings and performance reviews

    *

Help maintain a clean, safe and hazardfree working environment

    ⭐ Who We’re Looking For

You don’t need previous survey experience — just enthusiasm, commitment, and a willingness to learn.

We’re looking for someone who is:

    *

Computer literate and comfortable using handheld technology

    *

    Organised, practical and detailfocused

    *

A confident communicator and team player

    *

Flexible, openminded and willing to work away from home

    *

Aware of general safety and quality requirements

    Desirable (but not essential):

    *

    CSCS card

    *

    Full driving licence

If you don’t have these yet, don’t worry — we can support the right apprentice to gain them.

    🎁 What You’ll Gain

    *

    A nationally recognised apprenticeship

    *

Specialist technical skills and handson experience

    *

Training in GPS survey equipment and industryspecific software

    *

The chance to work on meaningful nationwide infrastructure projects

    *

Supportive mentoring and a clear development pathway
