How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Join the Department for Transport’s Low Carbon Fuels Directorate, where you’ll help accelerate the shift to greener transport and play a vital role in tackling climate change. Working in a high-performing, supportive team, you’ll build expertise in green transport policy, low carbon fuels and emerging energy systems. This is a fast-paced, priority policy area at the forefront of government ambition—perfect for motivated professionals passionate about sustainability and driving real-world decarbonisation.

The vacancies will be spread across two divisions:

    * LCF Strategy – these roles will focus on developing the UK’s strategic approach to low carbon fuels. This includes work on areas such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production, hydrogen strategy, and applying systems thinking to complex, cross‑cutting challenges. The team works closely with colleagues across government on infrastructure transition, resilience and longer‑term strategic planning.

    * Sustainable Aviation Fuel Revenue Certainty Mechanism – these roles will support the development of the policy design and implementation of the Revenue Certainty Mechanism’s funding mechanism and DfT’s approach to allocating Revenue Certainty Mechanism contracts.

    Top Responsibilities

    * Developing the UK’s strategic approach to Low Carbon Fuels in transport by assessing policy options, drafting key documents, compiling evidence, scoping research projects, and planning stakeholder engagement and workshops.

    * Monitoring and developing policy and contributions relating to low carbon policy across Government, supporting the team’s wider work.

    * Leveraging technical expertise to inform the design of Revenue Certainty Mechanism policy.

    * Managing own workstreams with autonomy, identifying issues and proposing innovative solutions. Taking a key role in project management across all workstreams in the team.

    * Working closely with modal transport teams on any potential fuel regulations in their area and ensuring alignment with existing regulations such as the RTFO and SAF Mandate.

    * Commissioning and overseeing expert internal and external advice, including legal and analytical as necessary. Using sound judgement and influencing and persuasion skills to resolve problems and reach solutions.

    * Building strong relationships with a range of stakeholders across DfT, Government and externally, including with the DfT’s legal advisors, the Science Office, Defra and DESNZ, and with academia and industry to develop, test and promote low carbon fuels policy.

    * Providing advice and briefing to ministers, drafting responses to correspondence and FOI/EIRs as required.

    * Excellent career development opportunities and the potential to undertake professional qualifications relevant to your role paid for by the department, such as CIPD, Prince2, apprenticeships, etc.

    * Joining a diverse and inclusive workforce with a range of staff communities to support all our colleagues.

    * 24-hour Employee Assistance Programme providing free confidential help and advice for staff.

    * Flexible working options where we encourage a great work-life balance.
