How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

This role will suit an experienced engineer who is confident managing their own section of works, driving productivity on site, and interfacing effectively with both delivery and design teams.

    Role Overview

As Section Engineer, you will take ownership of specific work packages, ensuring they are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with programme and quality expectations. You will play a key role in coordinating site activities, managing junior engineers, and ensuring technical compliance across your section.

    Key Responsibilities

    Planning & Coordination

    - Take responsibility for planning, programming, and coordinating works within your designated section
    - Work closely with Site Engineers, Sub Agents, and Project Managers to ensure seamless delivery
    - Interface with design teams to resolve technical queries (TQs) and ensure buildability of works

    Technical Delivery

    - Interpret and implement engineering drawings, specifications, and contract requirements
    - Oversee setting out activities and ensure accuracy of all surveying works
    - Ensure all works relating to structures (e.g. bridges, culverts, retaining walls), highways (including pavements, kerbing, and surfacing), drainage (surface water and foul systems), and utilities (diversions, installations, and protection works) are delivered to specification

    Quality Assurance

    - Prepare, review, and implement Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs)
    - Ensure works are delivered Right First Time and in accordance with project quality standards
    - Maintain comprehensive and accurate as-built records and documentation

    Health, Safety & Environment

    - Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all HSE requirements
    - Review and implement Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
    - Carry out site inspections and ensure safe systems of work are adhered to at all times

    Commercial & Progress Reporting

    - Track progress against programme and report any delays or risks
    - Assist with measurement and record keeping for commercial purposes
    - Support change management processes, including early warnings and compensation events

    Team Leadership

    - Provide guidance and technical support to Site Engineers and Junior Engineers
    - Supervise subcontractors and ensure works are delivered to agreed standards
    - Foster a collaborative and proactive working environment on site

    Key Requirements

    - Demonstrable experience working as a Section Engineer on major infrastructure or civil engineering projects
    - Strong technical knowledge across multiple disciplines, including:
    - Structures (RC works, steel structures, foundations)
    - Highways (earthworks, sub-base, surfacing, kerbing)
    - Drainage (deep drainage, attenuation systems, ducting)
    - Utilities (diversions, service coordination, statutory undertakers)
    - Proficient in setting out using modern surveying equipment (e.g. Leica, Trimble)
    - Strong understanding of construction tolerances, specifications, and quality standards
    - Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and models

    Qualifications & Certifications

    - Degree / HNC / HND in Civil Engineering or related discipline
    - Valid CSCS card (essential)
    - SMSTS or SSSTS (desirable)
    - Personal Attributes

    - Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
    - Collaborative approach with a focus on delivering project success

    What’s on Offer

    - Long-term freelance role on a high-profile infrastructure project
    - Competitive day rate with consistent pipeline of work
    - Opportunity to gain experience across a diverse range of civil engineering disciplines
    - Supportive and forward-thinking project team environment
