How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Civil Engineer
    Edinburgh

Are you passionate about using Civil Engineering to deliver positive environmental change and help communities become more resilient to climate risks? This role offers the chance to be part of meaningful projects that restore river environments, improve flood defences, support sustainable infrastructure and enhance natural systems across the UK.

You will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team within an award-winning Consultancy that values innovation, sustainability and professional growth, working on projects that make a real difference to people and places.

An opportunity has arisen for a Civil Engineer to join a growing environmental and engineering Consultancy delivering projects that make a meaningful difference to communities and the environment. The role offers the chance to contribute to a wide range of environmental improvement, river restoration, flood risk management, infrastructure and energy projects across the UK, while developing technical capability within a supportive, multidisciplinary team.

Based in Edinburgh, you will work as part of an established engineering team alongside specialists including coastal modellers, reservoir engineers, geotechnical engineers, ecologists and geomorphologists. The role will involve supporting the appraisal, design and delivery of projects from early concept through to construction, contributing practical and sustainable engineering solutions that respond to client needs and environmental challenges.

The successful candidate will support technical design activities, including earthworks, drainage design, retaining walls and headwalls, and assist with the preparation of design calculations, drawings and technical reports. They will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, helping to ensure designs are delivered efficiently, safely and in accordance with relevant standards, environmental legislation and CDM requirements. The role will also involve supporting site visits across the UK, including occasional overnight stays, to assist with project delivery and construction-stage activities.

The Civil Engineer will contribute to project delivery in a fast-paced Consultancy environment, working with a range of public, private and third-sector clients, including those within local government. An awareness of public-sector delivery processes, governance and funding mechanisms would be beneficial, particularly in supporting projects through design development and implementation. Exposure to projects delivered under the NEC4 suite of contracts would be advantageous, with opportunities to develop commercial and contractual awareness as experience grows.

Experience or interest in areas such as natural flood management, sustainable urban drainage systems, hydraulic modelling and Flood Risk Assessment would be beneficial. Familiarity with digital design tools, and an interest in developing skills in areas such as coding or parametric modelling, would also be welcomed. A full UK driving licence is required.

Candidates will hold a bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in Civil Engineering or a related discipline and will typically be working toward professional qualification, or preparing to enter Initial Professional Development, with a relevant professional body such as the Institution of Civil Engineers. The role would suit a motivated and well-organised engineer who enjoys collaborative working, problem-solving and developing their technical skills within a supportive team environment.

The organisation supports hybrid and flexible working arrangements, with the role based from a modern Edinburgh office offering good transport links and facilities that support sustainable travel. In return, you will be offered a competitive salary, flexible working options and access to a strong professional development framework, including a generous training budget and support toward professional qualification. Applications are welcomed from individuals looking to build a long-term career in Consultancy while contributing to projects that support climate resilience and environmental improvement.
