Assistant Quantity Surveyor

Fit Out UK is a well-established interior fit-out contractor specialising in high-quality projects for the Banking, Retail, and Commercial sectors. We deliver complex branch refurbishments, flagship stores, headquarters upgrades, and secure fit-outs across the UK. We are looking for an enthusiastic Assistant / Intermediate Quantity Surveyor to join our team and support the successful delivery of our growing portfolio of M&E-intensive projects.

About the Role

This is an excellent opportunity for an assistant or intermediate-level Quantity Surveyor to develop their skills in a fast-paced, technically demanding environment. Reporting to the Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will assist with the financial, contractual, and commercial management of M&E fit-out projects in banking and retail environments, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

* Assisting with contract administration, including JCT Minor Works, Intermediate, and Design & Build forms commonly used in banking and retail fit-outs.

* Supporting procurement and commercial management of M&E trade packages (mechanical services, electrical installations, HVAC, specialist lighting, fire & security systems, data/comms, and BMS).

* Helping to prepare accurate cash flow forecasts, cost reports, and cost-value reconciliations specific to M&E elements.

* Assisting in the preparation and negotiation of valuations, variations (especially M&E design changes and client-driven upgrades), and final accounts.

* Attending site meetings and supporting project teams on live banking branch and retail store fit-outs, often in occupied or high-security environments.

* Liaising with specialist M&E subcontractors, suppliers, and consultants to manage packages effectively.

* Ensuring compliance with JCT contracts, construction regulations, and sector-specific requirements (e.g., banking security standards, retail landlord specifications, and M&E testing & commissioning protocols).

What We’re Looking For

* A degree or relevant qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.

* Some commercial experience (even if limited) in M&E fit-out, retail, banking, commercial refurbishment, or similar high-spec projects.

* Basic understanding of JCT contracts and strong cost management principles, with an interest in mechanical and electrical installations.

* Good working knowledge of packages, variations, and commissioning processes is advantageous.

* Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.

* A proactive, team-oriented approach and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-moving environment.

* Based in or near London, with flexibility to visit project sites across the UK as required (many projects are in Central London and the South East).
