Year 1 Special Needs Assistant (SNA)
Start Date: Monday, 13 April 2026
    Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–12:30pm (mornings only)

We are seeking a mature, experienced, and resilient Special Needs Assistant to support a Year 1 pupil with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, and complex behavioural needs. This is a highly demanding but rewarding 1:1 role, requiring strong expertise, independence, and a calm, consistent approach.

    About the Role

You will work closely with a pupil who requires constant supervision and a highly structured, specialist ASC approach. The role involves delivering a personalised learning programme in a dedicated group room, separate from the main classroom, following an individualised timetable.

    Key Responsibilities

    *

Provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the morning session

    *

Deliver structured routines with clear expectations and planned movement breaks

    *

Implement specialist ASC strategies tailored to the child’s needs

    *

Manage behaviour confidently using consistent boundaries and de-escalation techniques

    *

Use declarative language approaches to reduce triggers

    *

Adapt activities in real-time to maintain engagement

    *

Communicate effectively with the class teacher, SENDCo, and parents

    *

Contribute to IEPs, reports, and EHCP processes

    *

Use SEND platforms and IT systems to track progress and create resources

    *

Attend and engage in paid in-house training

    Essential Requirements

    *

Minimum 2 years’ experience supporting children with ASC (and related needs such as ODD/ADHD) in a primary setting

    *

Proven experience working 1:1 with pupils with significant SEND and behavioural challenges

    *

Ability to work independently, reliably, and proactively

    *

Strong behaviour management skills and emotional resilience

    *

    Excellent communication and teamwork skills

    *

Confidence using structured, specialist approaches beyond mainstream strategies

    Desirable

    *

Experience in specialist provisions or PRUs

    *

Training in positive handling / physical intervention

    *

Strong understanding of the UK SEND system

    Candidate Profile

We are looking for someone who is:

    *

Calm, adaptable, and quick to learn

    *

Highly proactive with strong professional judgement

    *

Able to think on their feet and adjust approaches as needed

    *

Passionate about supporting children with complex needs

    Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a morning trial, shadowing the current SNA to demonstrate their approach and suitability for the role
